Title: Deco Bistro Now Open
Post by: Dog Walker on December 31, 2009, 12:22:33 PM
Went by Deco Bistro while walking the dogs this morning and saw that Deco Bistro is now open.  Menus in the window show that the selections are quite extensive and seem to be in keeping with the bistro name.  Main Course prices seem to be $12-$22.

Some of us need to try it in the next few days and write a review.  Steph?

she's on a stupid diet. Hopefully she'll make an exception after the holidays though.

I did walk by yesterday and the wait staff was outside greeting everyone that passed by. I can't wait to try it out myself.

I went a couple weeks ago.

Very Brown & Black inside.

About what you'd expect. Food was good.

Gee . . . almost hate to post this, because I want to support all biz in the 'hood.  But.  Just went last night and it's really not that good. Menu is quite ordinary--really nothing to justify the prices.  Food was okay but, again, nothing to justify the prices. Atmosphere needs some work to . . . justify the prices. Owner is super-friendly, ditto the chef and the (not very sophisticated) servers. Personally, DH and I (who I have to think epitomize their target customers) just can't see it lasting long. Sorry!

I walked by last night, looks nice. Although the decorating needs a little help....looks a little bare, but still excited to go eat. :-D

Went to this restaraunt last night, I had a WONDERFUL TIME. I read a complaint on here about the prices not being justified? Maybe you should look back at a reflection of yourself. There are some very nice art pieces on the walls, more to be a conversation pieces. The food was awesome, prices REASONABLE. No more expensive then going to The Brick, Bluefish, Biscotti's all are along the same line in price. Can't wait until they get the bar fully stocked. The servers are amazing as well. Everyone should really give them a try. You will all be pleasantly surprised.

I haven't been, so I will save real judgement until after that, but I don't want to pay more for the art.

As far as the prices being near Brick and Biscotti's, that's okay, but they better be able to bring it.  Brick and Biscotti's are two Avondale destinations, because they have a very good and consistent product (not the best restaraunts in Jacksonville, but VERY solid).

I go out to eat a lot, but I can't do either Brick and Biscotti's every night, even on a solid dual income, no kids household.  I don't mind paying those prices, but they better bring it when I sit down.

Uh, not sure what that means . . .
Just trying to be honest. I'd LOVE for these folks to succeed. I simply found that on (my admittedly only) visit to the restaurant, both DH and I were underwhelmed and found the food to be overpriced for the quality, conception and presentation.  As Steve mentioned, the Brick and Biscotti's are this place's major competition, and until Deco Bistro corrects some things, it's just not going to be able to play in the same league.

The restaurant business is brutal and finding the sweet spot in terms of menu and pricing in this economy must be nigh impossible. IMHO, Deco Bistro hasn't found it yet. I sincerely hope they work out their kinks, as this could be a great addition to 5 Points.

Uh oh. This is shaping up to be Bungalow on Park all over again. That perjorative post sure appears as though it may be an owner or employee shilling. Ugh. High Prices + New Restaurant + Bad Economy = Out of Business. There are so many places I can go to drop $150 on dinner around here, that are known and consistent, that there has to be some enticement to take a risk. Start off reasonable and increase prices with demand. Otherwise, you'll never make your numbers work.

New eatery in Five Points

Those who woke up today and thought "I need a slice of crab cheesecake" might want to try the new Deco Bistro in Five Points. For those who do not crave lump crabmeat combined with cream and Cheddar cheeses and baked in a buttery crumb crust, Deco provides a range of menu items and daily specials full of flavor and pizazz.

Co-owners Ken Davis and John Hatch have a vision for Deco Bistro that transformed the 100-year-old building with shag carpets that used to house Ragland's into a beautifully tiled New York-style ambience with a unique menu.

"We want everyone, whether they are 20 or 50, vegetarian, seafood fanatic or American food connoisseur, to find something that excites them," Hatch said.

Prices for lunch range from $9 to $14, and dinner prices are from $12 to $28. Those enjoying dinner can sip on specialty beers as well as sparkling, blush, white and red wines ranging from $18 to $30 a bottle.

Deco will offer live music, including jazz singers and live piano music on a "Casablanca" themed night, the first Friday of every month. White dinner jackets are not frowned on in this gin joint.

If the perfect plans for Valentine's Day have not been found, consider a couple designed menu for $56 or $90 a couple, that includes multiple courses in a romantic setting. The first 15 reservations also include a free bottle of sparkling wine.

Deco Bistro, 1023 Park St., is located in Five Points and is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday with a Sunday brunch available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For reservations call (904) 358-8704 or visit the Web site www.deco-bistro.com for menus and directions.

Finally had a chance to try Deco Bistro last night.  Good service, nice ambiance. Not too noisy. Safe, comfort food menu.  Portions are just right.  Presentation is OK.

Food, while well balanced, is boring, as if they are trying hard not to offend anyone.  IMO, they need to kick up the flavors a notch, especially considering their nearby competition.

Read elsewhere on MJ that Deco Bistro place is already out of business.  Ate there a couple of times for business lunches.  I thought the food was adequately good at lunch but it was too richly priced for the area's everyday lunch crowd.  Service was a bit off too and the awkward and poorly marked step down at the entrance wasn't too clever.   This place needed business style lunches (and top notch service) to float these prices and I don't think 5 Points tops the locations for that.  Maybe, if they lasted a few years they could have pulled in their own crowd.

Parking for lunch at 5 Points can also be an issue if there are too many restaurants serving lunch.  I guess without this place and Fu Hao on the corner anymore, that may be less of an issue but the Italian place seems to be a mainstay.  More than once, I have circled the block.  The business lunch crowd isn't going  to go for that at the prices that were being asked.

Lastly, did this place do any marketing or create a buzz?  I only found it by walking from my parking spot one day on the way to Fu Hao.

What Italian place?

I live in Riverside and hardly ever eat here.  I like the restaurants in San Marco, Avondale and downtown better.

Here you go, 9a.  Eaten here many times for lunch and an easy place to go to get a full stomach with decent, but not award winning, food at a fair price.  No atmosphere though.  Just your typical neighborhood "easy Italian fix" joint.  Never had dinner there so can't speak for that but probably more of the same.

Avondale is part of Riverside. Saying "I don't eat in Riverside I eat in Avondale" sounds silly.

They are not kidding about the "same setting" for over 30 years. That place looked horrible (and we ate there often) when I was in high school in the 80's. The decor etc looked 30 years old then. Food was decent...liked their house dressing... and yes you will not leave hungry and prices are quite budget friendly.  Does the Sicilian version of the "Soup Nazi" still run the place?

^^^^^^and it is always a plus to be (probably) the only joint in town where you can pick chicken livers to go with your pasta and red sauce.   :)

I guess I should have said 5 Points to be more accurate.  I don't know what the 'official' boundaries are, but I consider Riverside and Avondale to be separate neighborhoods.
