Despite the economy, new bars continue to spring up around Downtown Jacksonville's fledging entertainment district, a trend we would like to see accelerate in 2010.

Jason and Joy have a winner! Great place and great hosts!
Agreed BT. Jason has some other things he wants to do as well. I hope that the success he has seen with Dos Gatos is enough to push him to act on them.
Nice work Jason and Joy, and big Kudos to your Wait-staff as well.
The place is across from the Florida Theatre. It is an awesome place, with excellent service.
Nice interior. Best of luck ot them.
Thanks guys! ;)
:D You wish!
You're right, I do!
That place looks fantastic!
What kind of exterior signage do they have?
None at this time... Jason told me he is going with a classic neon "Cocktails" sign hanging over the sidewalk...

Did Bos just suggest that they should have mimicked the decor of Bennagins, Serejevo?
Here's wishing prosperity to such a lovely establishment as Dos Gatos!
I've GOT to get by and try Jason's Sazerac! Had a chance to buy that building at a bargain price many years ago and have always regretted not doing it.
The bartenders there are awesome! It's sad, but this is the first place near the core where I have seen any flair bartending. I am still working on some of the bottle opening flair tricks I saw when I was there. Drinks are great, fairly priced, and atmosphere is very cozy.
Two Thumbs Up
I've heard good things about the place. Looking forward to grabbing a beer there. Speaking of beer, whats on tap? Any Bold City beers?
Yeah, Dos Gatos is a great place. I like the fact that it's different from anywhere else downtown... well probably different from anywhere else in Jax for that matter. It's definitely a part of my weekly rotation. :)
On tap they have Dead Guy Ale ( a personal favorite) bold city mad manatee, dog fish ( i think), and brooklyn lager. I may be back there tonight, so I'll update that list If I was incorrect.
Any food? What are the hours? Where exactly? Whiskey?
Okay, I'm done!
REBEL YELL??
OCKLAWAHA
stoked for Dos Gatos, truly a great addition to the dwntwn club/bar scene. 8)
Dos Gatos is great! I've been there three times already.
Unrelated but sort of related, heard about a new bar called LIT opening up on New Years Eve? Anyone know anything?
there is a thread on it

Ock, they have tons of whiskey and it's top top shelf!!!!
Beautiful looking bar; wow, I hope the others along the strip are just as great looking. Jax is moving up in the neighborhood.
"HU"
Ock, I expect you to take me down there sometime. ;)
Pictures look great. Looking forward to checking it out soon.
Here is their website...

Dos Gatos is awesome!! Great drinks and an excellent atmosphere.
I have frequented this place numerous times and can only say thank you Jay and Joy. It's just what DT was in need of. Lounge vibe, great drinks, awesome music and a just truly all around unique ambiance.
Four thumbs up and Best of luck going forward.
PS...Thx for the tickets once again Jay

Heh i thought that too. The architecture itself is very cool in that pic, but they cluttered it up with too much ish on the walls. I like Dos Gatos's interior design. It's soothing, relaxing even.
They are probably the only bar in downtown that doesn't get its' mixers from one of those nozzle things.

Dos Gatos, is by far, the best straight bar downtown.
Is it gay friendly?
:D Everyone I have ever met there is friendly... :)
Fine, Stephen meant that it is a bar only, not a club of any kind. I did a double-take when I read Stephen's post too.
:D :D Duh... I get it now... ::) :D
How come MetroJacksonville is never at the bars when I am at the bars?
I'll be looking for you MetroJacksonville and if I see you out then it's shots of Grandma on me! ;D
Jason and his gang know how to do things right.
I must throw in my approval as well! Jay and the rest of the staff are always very friendly and ready to serve. I am a regular attendee (2 or 3 times a week) and have yet to be unsatisfied with service. The atmosphere is awesome and they have different themed musick depending on the night. I'm sure I'll make an appearence for art walk...
It was fun on NYE.
I stopped in last night with some friends and we had a great time! I really like the decor and the lounge area is a great place to chill. It really opens up back there... plenty of space while there were still plenty of fellow patrons. 4.5/5 :-)
A group of us went there Friday night as well. At 11:30pm they were at capacity for a time.
I love Dos Gatos! It's where I was introduced to Metrojacksonville.com.... & I got to hold a snake. LOL! Stoli Apple kickoff party... what a night.
Does Dos Gatos have any signage on the street yet? - I thought that I'd read that something was coming soon, but I suggested to a friend of mine that he try it out last week(end) & he indicated that he couldn't locate it (I know that it's directly accross from the Florida Theatre)......
Blizz,
We don't have a sign as of yet. I have some designs on my desk, but I'm just not in love with anything enough to pull the trigger. In the meantime, we've been working on other ways to let people know where we are, such as our cafe permit, which was recently approved. I've ordered tables and such so I can create an area out front where patrons can smoke and drink... usually a good sign there's a bar nearby! :D
Thanks for spreading the word! I'll get that sign up....eventually....I promise!
J.
Rock, you two cats have never explained the "Dos Gatos" name. Where did it come from?
Twas a lucky find.....
Sit in the middle of the bar. Look at the mural. Drink a glass of scotch...rocks...try the Deanston.
Your repost reads, "Do'h!"
LOL!
J.
Will do! But it will be a Sazerac.
Tried the Deanston last nite. Good, but I prefer blended scotch.
Dog - I'd be happy to make you a Sazerac if you'll forgive me for using a nice Absinthe wash in place of Herbsaint...I tried to get some, but UPS destroyed the bottle...see what brown can do for you?!
urban - As a veteran scotch drinker, I totally understand the appeal of a good blend... it's like a great orchestra vs. a solo musician... at the same time, I'll take Yo Yo Ma over the Cleveland Municipal Philharmonic...LOL (nothing against Cleveland, people...take it easy....)

You do know the Cleveland Orchestra is arguably the best orchestra in the world, yeah? ;D That's not the Cleveland Municipal though, so your joke still works, but the way you included your disclaimer I wasn't sure if you were aware...
sorry, just a brief aside.
I went Saturday evening for the first time & met an old friend that I hadn't seen for 20+ years - it was a perfect setting.

Everybody, Jason now has some Herbsaint for making Sazeracs! It has a much more complex floral flavor than straight Absinthe and Jason has some killer-smooth rye whiskey for the base. Try one while it lasts!
Walker...thank you! Ever since UPS broke my bottle of H'saint (what can brown do for me??) I'd been gun-shy about having anything else shipped to me surreptitiously.
If you're a purist, I'll even make your sazerac with cognac....upon request only.

Finally got to Dos Gatos last week.Great spot and so close to the other venus. Its a start.
I stopped in Friday for a couple drinks. I had the scofflaw last time which was pretty good so I told the bartender to surprise me... she came back with a Orange Jalapeno Martini... I thought this is the last time I go with the surprise drink... then I tasted it... unbelievably good!
Sounds spicey.
It was pretty mild... next time I'll request muy caliente which is listed on the menu as an option.
The gin julip is the best drink I've ever had. That's not saying much, but it's fantastic. The $8 price and wait -- every step is done at time of order -- are well worth it.
I went in for the first time this weekend to see my friend Seka (who is now serving there). I was really surprised! The place such a great atmosphere. I appreciated the smoke-free environment (even though I'm a smoker myself.)
The drinks were unique and really great. The El Verano was almost *too refreshing* it was so good. The Mexicali was tasty with a little bit of a spicy kick that was absolutely enjoyable!
The girl they had spinning music (I can't remember her name but I've seen her at several places) spun a nice mix of stuff. Saw some people I didn't expect to see. All in all a great time!
Checked this place out last night after the Art Walk and had a great time. Pretty good swing band playing, good crowd, and great drinks. I'll definitely be back!!!
I finally made it down to Dos Gatos. My roomate isn't much of a drinker to my great misfortune, so I had to wait until I could find a date who was convinced going downtown at night wouldn't result in her rape and/or murder.
I had that Orange Jalepeno Margarita and it took some getting used to, but once it was about half done I started not to feel the burn anymore and really enjoyed it.
The ambiance was great. I am definately glad this place is walking distance from my place. I especially like that I nursed my drink for about an hour and not once was hassled about having another. Can't wait to go back.

I have the same experience when talking to people about downtown. They really think that downtown is where murders and rapes happen on a daily basis. If this was even remotely true, wouldn't it be on the news? I think that the local media is partially to blame because of their blatant failure to properly identify where crimes are happening. They use the unfortunate catch-all 'NORTHSIDE' to identify places as varied as North Riverside, Springfield, downtown, Eastside, etc. Shame!
preaching to the converted......
Was a good crowd last night.. and I got to stare at my incredibly hot friend Seka working behind the bar. *drool*

+1 and she's incredibly nice too!
Well, that was young people life now. They have their night life that they always going to the bar to have fun. However, they are thinking that sometimes this can bring them into harm. They don't even thinking their safety in their life just they have fun.

"Out Of Left Field" quote of the month. If you're an actual real person. I think I kinda get what you're trying to say.. maybe.. that there are lots of the younger set that like to go to the bar and see their friends. If you're referring to the safety of Dos Gatos being less than optimal, you're barking up the wrong tree. I've never felt any fear there. It's a comfortable place where people tend not to get "piss drunk" and start fights. In fact, the atmosphere is probably one of the most friendly I've ever felt at a bar.
But they did manage to get their website in the sig line

LoL Cat.... is that you??
That was the most random and poorly written post ever. Dos Gatos is extremely safe and one of the best bars in the city.
Yeah, it's just a spammer...

Dos Gatos Rocks!
Amen.
I've removed the signature (probably the reason they posted so it get spidered), and banned the user. The Ip address of the poster was from the Phillipines, so I really don't think they are concered about the safety at Dos Gatos!
Steve
Just a heads up, Dos Gatos will be throwing their 1 Year Ann. party toward the middle of next month. The projected date is November 13th (not set in stone). I was there for the grand opening, I can't believe it's already been a year.
