Luminaria - December 19 and 20, 2009
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Riverside Avondale’s beloved Luminaria celebration. To celebrate, we’re expanding the event into a full weekend of community spirit, holiday fanfare and neighborhood fun! Events for Saturday, December 19th include a Holiday market and entertainment at the Riverside Arts Market, a guided bike tour of the historic district, and a raft of holiday discounts at our local restaurants and businesses. Sunday, December 20th, will feature a self-guided walking tour of historic churches, a Historic Trolley tour of the Luminaria lights, the ever-popular Luminaria Bike Ride, a live nativity scene and numerous musical performances at area churches, andâ€"of course!â€"the traditional lighting of the Luminaria lanterns at sundown.

We have a group of friends going tonight, it should be an awesome time.
Yesterday morning my girlfriend and I did the historic bike tour RAP put on and we had a great time. The lady Jean who led it was very informative and a really great host. It also had a very good turnout of a little over 40 people at the start. I also really enjoyed the format for a tour like that. It made it easy to see so many different places.
We are also planning on doing the church tour today, which I am looking forward to as I have not been in most of those churches.
I'm going to do the church tour, too. Glad to hear you enjoyed the bike ride!
There are a ton of programs at district churches tonight: caroling, handbell concerts, a Live Nativity, a bluegrass concert, a concert in Riverside Park, organ recitals--really, almost too many to list. I don't think the churches get nearly the props they deserve for opening their doors to everyone at this time of year. Also, for the first time, there will be trolleys circling the district, stopping at or near many of the churches and restaurants who are participating (some are offering discounts). They're a good way to avoid having to deal with the traffic yourself. Check out all the details at riversideavondale.org.
Anyone get photos?
We're lining the median of Edgewood tonight, its always a great party and time to see neighbors. This is a great example of what Jacksonville is all about!
We had four trailer loads had a great time. The kids DJ ing on Saint Johns were great. The Choirs, Churches and homes made a beautiful tour. We even had some out of town guests to show off to. I will try to get some pics up tonight.
The streets looked beautiful last night!!
Always nice to see the Riverside/Avondale luminaria....just hope they're picked up, too may of them end up in the middle of the street after Xmas. :-\
