Post by: samiam on December 16, 2009, 04:31:12 PM
President Obama was at Home Depot yesterday promoting this program yesterday. I guess the powers that be are still working on the details. but it looks like we could get up to $12.000 to winterize and update our homes

$12........ Depending upon the caulk that is about three or four tubes of caulk.  The paperwork would take more $$$ than that.

But we don't need to "winterize" our homes down here.  We need to "summerize" them!  Will they give us incentives for white roofs and awnings, too?

Are they going to give discounts on clear plastic sheets for people up north to cover their windows?

I like the way you're thinking.

But if you were getting heat from a space heater winterize may include central HVAC.  There is always the insulation factor. Which could include insulation under the floor in an off grade old house........or upgrading the old R-19 blown-in celouse in the attic that has settled down to an R-4 to an R-30. Both will help in those other eleven months.

Hmm, me and my partner's house does need new insulation in the attic, sounds interesting. I'll have to look into this.

Well now the folks in Miami have a new scam, winterize the condos of south Florida.

This could be great for people that purchase homes that are in need of renovation. 12,000 in incentives would go a long way. By the way it looks like the incentives are for making your home more energy efficient not only winterizing

The greenest house is a house already built.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  Quit giving incentives for developers to destroy what's left of natural Florida and renovate/retrofit the housing stock already built.  There are plenty of disturbed lands to satisfy any growth that we have for generations to come.   Architectural preservation and conservation of natural resources & biodiversity go hand in hand.  Too bad that the home builders have their powerful trade groups, but individual contractors that do renovations/restorations are a huge, but a generally unorganized voice.

Use and maintain the infrastructure that we have in place now, do not use my tax dollars to make a developer richer. They say the new development will improve the tax base. I just don't see it ,what is the dollar return on this kind of stuff. The city of Jacksonville has areas with infrastructure that are 100 plus years old, yes some need repair but there are people there that have been paying there taxes so the city has a duty to make these repairs.
