QuoteTeens Charged In Slaying Of Pizza Driver
Police Say Delivery Was Ordered To Vacant Apartment

POSTED: Monday, December 7, 2009
UPDATED: 2:57 pm EST December 7, 2009
Murray Hill killing investigated
Police spent much of Saturday in the neighborhood looking for witnesses or other evidence in the slaying of a pizza delivery woman.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police have charged a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 57-year-old woman delivering pizzas to what turned out to what turned out to be a vacant apartment in a Murray Hill neighborhood Friday night.

Police said Sarah Hotham was delivering for Domino's to a small apartment complex in the 1100 block of Comanch Street about 9:30 p.m. when she was shot in the chest. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

Police said that a similar incident the night before only blocks away when someone stuck a gun in a pizza delivery man's stomach and demanded money. Police worked through the weekend and came across two teenagers that they said had items on them they believed were taken from Hotham.

Jonathan Hartley, 15, was charged with murder and robbery. Keon Sams, 17, was charged with murder while committing a felony and carrying a concealed firearm.

"Nobody expects, you know, out making a dollar, to get killed on the job," said Clayton Grossi, who live near where the woman was shot.

Police don't know if they are looking for a single gunman or multiple people, but they spent much of Saturday in the neighborhood looking for witnesses and other evidence.

Friends of Hotham described her as a workaholic who was just trying to make ends meet.

"When they told me she passed, I though maybe from a heart attack or something, but never murder," said Mary Frost, who had lived next to Hothan for nine years.

This was Jacksonville's 100th homicide of 2009. Last year, the city had 144 killings.

Such a shame to be charged so young, but good ridance. They'll likely be charged as adults, hopefully.

I would think they should be, and hopefully will be off the streets for good...bottom dwelling thugs. I have absolutely no sympathy for them, too bad they can't face ole' sparky

Meh, public hanging, firing squad, or stoning would be better, imo.

Glad they caught them... the Police haven't had much luck doing that in quite a while.

I imagine you're trying to tie this to the heated discussion last week about Kiko Battle, when they couldn't be more different situations from each other.

Sorry, I am unfamiliar with that and not trying to tie to anything.  Just expressing my opinion - this is a forum, and that is what people do in a forum, right?  My beef is how criminals seem more protected than the victims, and yes, I was being sarcastic (poor criminals...good fellows...).  I have no sympathy for those who hurt others, but it seems to get me crucified on this forum when I speak my truth.  Why is that? (and Stephen...I have not yet begun to "rant".  Nor will I.  I've seen some ranting on this forum and it isn't pretty.)

Well, the police arrested them, but before we can call for the death penalty there has to be a trial to find out if they are actually guilty. Sorry to disappoint.

I'm not disappointed that they'll get a fair trial, nor did I call for the death penalty.

They are old enough to know what they were doing and the consequences of their actions.  They'll be tried as adults and I hope they rot in prison for it, personally.

This is horrible.  I want to think that pizza delivery transactions should be via debit or credit card only.  If the delivery person does not carry cash, this might remove the temptation to rob and/or kill.  I also would not mind if these same establishments deny delivery to areas with high crime rates.  My sympathy goes out to the victim's family.

many of the delivery places do limit where they will or wont deliver to.  it is truly sad. sandyshoes, you are correct, the next thing we will read will be that these boys were "good church going boys" and that it was the delivery persons fault -

QuoteAccording to the local news... they killed her for... $40 and a pizza...

Actually no, these two knumbskulls committed the same crime the night before, where they STOLE the 40 bucks and a pizza. For Ms. Hotham, she was not robbed nor did she give up the cash. Perhaps if she had, she would still be alive. Many JSO would rather turn over their wallet in such an event, because you can replace everything in the wallet, you can't replace life.

I'd like to see some Texas style justice for these punks, but then Jesse Jackson and his posse would be all over us and we'd get more unwanted attention. Nice to know that if you use your mothers cell phone, the police can trace it back to you later.

No sweat, Diane Cho of Channel 4 did the most thorough job, but I was in talks with the TU beat writer and I had to show how this took place NOT in Murray Hill, but west of it.

I wish something more could be done for the safety of delivery drivers. I delivered in this area for quite a while for a small chain. Since they're not one of the larger chains, they didn't have a 'no weapon" policy like dominos, pizza hut and papa johns do. Most of my co-workers suggested being armed when going to some of the darker sides of our area, but I decided to you know, just get a different job instead.

No one's life is worth 5 bucks an hour, tips and gas reimbursement. Plus, those car-toppers they make delivery drivers sport only advertises they're a cash register on wheels.

Some people will tip a server 15-20% of the bill for bringing food from the kitchen to your table but only give the pizza guy or lady a buck or two for using their own vehicle and as you see, risking their life.

This area's claimed the lives of a few delivery people, it's sad.

Title of the thread should probably be Police Arrest Alleged Killers of Pizza Delivery Woman. Sad no matter how you slice it (promise that wasn't an intentional pun), but I've gotta withhold judgement on these guys until they are tried by a jury of their peers. If they are found guilty, let them rot in prison for the rest of their lives. But until then...

"The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said earlier that Hartley admitted he shot Hotham with Sams' gun." that was on the firstcoastnews.com web site.
Title: Re: Police Arrest Teenage Killers of Pizza Delivery Woman

Guess this means nothing
Quotepolice traced the cell phone used to call Domino's on both nights to Hartley's mother, Yvonne, who told police she allowed her son to use the phone. She gave police that information after arriving at a scene where police had stopped Hartley and Sams Sunday night.
Quotea description of Hotham's killer from homicide detectives. That description included at least one suspect wearing a dark, zip-up type hoodie jacket. Sams, who was wearing the described jacket, ran from the group and was ordered to stop by police. An officer felt what appeared to be a gun on his right side and Sams began pulling away. The officer wrestled him to the ground and Sams said, "Sorry man, it's a gun," the arrest report said.
Let alone that there's been a confession....

Darn right it'll be used against them in court, and hopefully it'll help to keep them off the streets for life...since it's rare that anyone gets the death penalty anymore, and even if they did, it would still be life behind bars. Which is exactly where these scum bags need to be.

Since I'm not Tebow, I'll laugh. :D

Since it's so offensive to some, which happens all of the time,  why doesn't a moderator simply split the thread?

oops, i thought the third one was the one that was home because of curfew, looks like it was one of the original ones that they caught.  "Jonathan Hartley, 15, and Keon Sams, 17, are charged with hatching the plan that led to Hotham’s death. Arrest reports accuse Hartley of shooting Hotham and Sams of providing him the gun. Sams told police he was home obeying a curfew when the attack occurred. Both teens are charged with armed robbery and murder." off of jacksonville.com

Another pizza delivery man was held up at knife point last night. Luckily no one was hurt.

thankfully he wasn't hurt, but it's going to come down to these places stopping deliveries...and as someone that has taken full advantage of having it brought to me, I wouldn't blame companies for stopping
