Title: The Railcar Industry. Could Jax Prosper by developing Manufacturer Here?
Post by: stephendare on November 28, 2009, 04:31:39 PM
Ock.  Here is a complete list of the worlds manufacturers of Locomotives and RailCar Equipment.

We have talked a few times about the vacuum in manufacturing in the US for the Rail Industry.

As you may remember when we met up with Stephen Gardener, the VP of Amtrak, he discussed in detail the giant shortage of rolling stock for passenger rail in the US.

Is it truly an opportunity for Jacksonville, if we had the capital and will?

Would you help me by narrowing this list down?  I was thinking we could identify only the companies that are based in North America.

Do you know enough about the list to be able to help do that?

Why not, we have a major RR in CSX, and have many engineering/signaling companies in the city.

I say build a rail out to Cecil Commerce, and start building away!

Try 3 major railroads, and we're so smart we just pulled up the railroad at Cecil Commerce Center within the last few years. CSX, FEC, NS, are all big hitters in the railroad league. Meanwhile we have the presence of over 45 railroads, either as terminal companies, shortlines, repair shops, or offices, within our city limits. As the 5Th largest rail center, 3Rd larges city in the east, 14Th largest port in container volume, and undisputed railroad and logistics center of Florida and the South, we should have chased this long ago.

Stephen, at least one of the companies on your list is already in Jax with a facility:  TTX.  At Acorn and Beaver, they rehab railcars for railroads all over the  country.

QuoteSoutheastern Repair Division (SRD) Jacksonville provides quality repair services at competitive costs for the entire TTX fleet.

TTX Company is North America’s leading provider of railcars and related freight car management services to the North American rail industry. Our pool of railcars â€" over 210,000 cars strong - is ideal for supporting shippers in the intermodal, automotive, lumber, machinery, building materials, steel, and other commodity groups where flatcars, boxcars, and gondolas are required.

TTX is owned by North America’s leading railroads, providing railcars on a usage basis thereby allowing railroads to conserve their capital for other critical infrastructure needs.  More important, however, TTX railcars free-run between railroads providing a fungible asset that minimizes total empty miles further lowering costs for the industry.  Customers easily recognize TTX’s bright yellow cars as a consistent, high quality, well-maintained fleet that serves many transportation needs.

Another Jax based company, Transquip USA, provides valves, etc. to the rail tank car industry.  See: http://www.transquip.com/

TTX downtown, XoRail (formerly Southwest Signal Engineering) has a place at 5011 Gate Parkway (just moved) works on the railroad signal systems, and countless manufacturing facilities that make parts that go into the railroad systems. We have more companies that are impacted by the rail system than are not part of the list.

Ock - If there is a need, the rail can be placed back into Cecil. Not a dead deal, but why bother, Ameristeel is located next to the Baldwin yard, so why not build a manufacturing facility THERE, next to the tracks???

Huntsville TRUMPS us and we have all of the tools to win!

Humm? Could be a banner for Cecil...

Huntsville Intermodal Center, AL, wrote the book on this stuff, #22 on the map, note the RR. BTW, Huntsville's terminal has been featured all over the transportation industry press...Amazing job.

THIS is what the PORT and NS should be looking at, hardly a rail yard of the classic sense but something like this would also make a HUGE contribution to Cecil.

MTRAIN, yeah I agree with you on this, someone suggested Cecil, which still wouldn't be a bad location, depending on how much/what locates there over the years. I think the railroad should be put back in and taken up to the airside YESTERDAY. I'd love to see us go after a national Intermodal Terminal like Huntsville. I would also like to see as the recovery gains speed, a serious look at a "Belt Railway," on the North and Northwest side of town, from Cecil to JIA to Jaxport. Such a project as opposed to the Outer Beltway North and Northwest, would be an industrial development powder keg.

I'd like to see a better Atlanta - Jacksonville line than the piecemeal system in place now. NS seems to have the best ATL-Jax connection, following US 23 for the most part out of ATL.

The PV "Royal Street," bringing up the markers on the Crescent Limited, this car was part of OUR Royal Palm equipment pool and certainly no stranger to Jacksonville.

You and me both, in fact I believe you know I'm rather passionate about "The Ponce De Leon" or "Royal Palm" trains and their route. North of Atlanta it's a straight shot to Chattanooga, Knoxville, Cincinnati. Once they roll into Cincinnati they can split 3 ways:

Cincinnati-Indy-Chicago
Cincinnati-Toledo-Detroit
Cincinnati-Columbus-Cleveland-Buffalo

On our end they could do the same thing.

Jacksonville-Daytona-Melbourne-West Palm-Miami
Jacksonville-Ocala-Lakeland-Tampa
Jacksonville-Orlando

I think we could muster the support to bend Amtrak's ear too, running one on a fast daylight schedule and the other on a slower overnight to Atlanta. I will take a look at the old schedules and see if I can figure out the times if you'd like, hell it might be fun.

I seriously doubt you can get the Feds to go north of ATL to Chicago. ATL-Jax is a High Speed corridor, but nothing north of ATL to Louisville is on the map according to the Ga DOT. The ATL to Jax traffic goes to the west, down to Cordele, then on over to Waycross, NS is not much better, once it passes through Hazlehurst, it heads down to Brunswick, away from US23. The North South lines on CSX in Ga are busy, but not quite as busy as the Folkston Funnel. We shall see what happens. A rail line would have saved many a person in I-75 this weekend, my neighbor braved 75 from ATL, while I got off and took 23, needless to say, I was home 2.5 hours earlier.
