Title: Here come the Jags!
Post by: Cricket on November 22, 2009, 05:51:11 PM
Is this flattery to deceive, or the beginning of a long love affair?

QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- David Garrard's second game-winning drive in as many weeks gave the Jacksonville Jaguars their first three-game winning streak in nearly two years.

Garrard threw a touchdown pass to Mike Sims-Walker with 56 seconds remaining and the Jaguars beat the Buffalo Bills 18-15 Sunday, spoiling Perry Fewell's debut as interim coach.

The Bills (3-7) bottled up Maurice Jones-Drew, pressured Garrard and managed 300 yards of offense for the first time in two months. But Garrard directed a 68-yard scoring drive when it mattered for the Jaguars (6-4). He managed a similar come-from-behind effort last week against the Jets.

Terrell Owens caught nine passes for 197 yards, including a team-record 98-yarder for a score. It was his best outing with the Bills, who have lost three straight and six of eight.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who replaced starter Trent Edwards earlier in the week, threw for 297 yards. He moved the Bills into Jacksonville territory in the closing seconds, but his fourth-down pass to Owens was tipped and then picked off by Anthony Smith.

Buffalo's biggest problem was missed opportunities. The Bills had two touchdowns called back by penalty, and they managed just a field goal on those drives.

The Bills also had more injury woes. Running back Marshawn Lynch left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. He was taken to the locker room on a cart and returned to the field in street clothes.

Guards Seth McKinney and Eric Wood also left with leg injuries.

Still, the Bills looked like they would pull off an upset after a tumultuous week that started with sideline bickering at Tennessee and continued with the firing of coach Dick Jauron two days later. Fewell inherited the task of pulling together a team that has struggled to score points and has faded late in games.

Fitzpatrick hooked up with Owens for the longest play in the history of Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, putting the Bills ahead 15-10 early in the fourth. Owens beat Tyron Brackenridge, who was filling in for injured starter Rashean Mathis, and high-stepped the last 20 yards into the end zone.

Owens emphatically dunked the ball over the goal post following his second TD catch of the season. But it was the last bit of celebration Buffalo's offense mustered.

The Bills botched the snap on the failed extra point. Garrard fumbled on the ensuing possession, but the Bills went three-and-out.

Garrard got the ball back with 6:12 remaining and four straight passes and moved the Jaguars to the 12-yard line. Jones-Drew took over from there, running five times but coming up short on second-and-goal from the 1. Facing third down, Garrard dropped back and floated a pass to Sims-Walker in the corner of the end zone.

Garrard also ran in for the 2-point conversion.

Not sure of the crowd count, but it looked ok. This was another game when you didnt know if the Jags were going to show up or not. Despite the ending it was a terrible game by the Jags on both sides of the ball.

Good Job Jags!

6 and 4... Same record as the defending champs who fell to the Chiefs today!

It looked far better on TV (watched in Tally) than the other 2 games I saw

I wonder if the turnstile count included the guys who got thrown out in the first quarter for a fight :)

Seriously, why are people so stupid to act like such idiots?  Don't tell me beer.

The Jags are IN the playoffs as of today. 6-4 and one of the Wild Card teams!

WOW!

Noone predicted this good of start.

Now we face the meat of the schedule, these next 6 games will be the toughest strech yet.

- We are in serious contention for a playoff spot
- We have one of the most exciting and most likeable players in the league (MJD)
- We are a young, and improving team

No reason not to get 55k + next home game.....

We have one almost assured win remaining in the schedule (cleveland) and two probable losses (Indy and NE). We HAVE to win the remaining games against some fair teams.

Watching Sunday's game at the stadium, was like the cardiac cats of old. It was a fun game to watch and be at! The weather turned out great, ate at the Landing before the game, rode the water taxi stadium. All the way around a great game and day. Too bad so many Jacksonvillians miss out. I really don't think they know what they are missing. Oh and I parked on Laura St one block from the Landing for FREE all day!!! parking is quite simple DT on Sunday morning.

That First Coast News feature follows in the wake of the Times-Union article earlier this year listing helpful hints for things to do instead of watching the game.  Why in the world is the local media doing destructive things like this?

I still can't believe some of the persistent negativity toward the Jaguars in spite of Gene Smith's emphasis on character and this exciting season with a young, developing team.  Someone commented on the T-U message board the other day that the Colts have players who want to win and the Jaguars have players who just want to collect a paycheck.  Huh?

I thought the crowd looked significantly better on TV than the reported turnstile count, for what it's worth.

I wouldn't say terrible that broadly.  Really, just two units of the team looked bad to me.

The offensive line had a miserable game until the fourth quarter.  From Vic's recap it sounds like the Bills did some stunting and different fronts to cover for the loss of Stroud and the Jaguars were guessing wrong for much of the game as to whether they'd be selling out against the run or the pass.  There were a number of times receivers got open and Garrard couldn't get them the ball because the Bills were in his face immediately.

The secondary of course suffered from the absence of Mathis.  Brackenridge had a rough time with Owens to say the least, and we were fortunate not to give up another TD bomb to Evans because of the one Bills lineman's unnecessary hands to the face on Harvey.  I've no idea how Owens got open over the middle repeatedly against zone coverages on 3rds and long, but it looked to me like the safeties (Considine, mainly) were either misreading routes or were slow in coverage.  The defense did perform much better after the Owens TD, though, and thank goodness Fitzpatrick was all over the place.

Well boo-f'ing-hoo for them.  Let's chuck all hints of professionalism out the window over it?  Poor.  But, it underlines my overarching belief that traditional media in general is crap and/or dead.

In the meantime, a big Double Tall-Man to all the naysayers who said the Guars would have a crap season.  4-12 my arse.

Exactly.  I have no clue how their record gets lost in this whole thing.  People still call them a "losing team" when they're 6-2 over their last 8, have won 3 in a row, and are 4-1 at home.

I was at the game yesterday and just wanted let everyone know I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the last minute hear-attack! Also, I wanted to say I was impressed with the crowd at the end of the game. From the looks of it, not many people left early and stayed the whole game which really made me smile.

The Jags are doing their part for Jacksonville by winning and doing it in a very entertaining way (may not be the safe way but still entertaining). Another highlight player is on the rise with Simms-Walker (spelling ?) and combined with Jones-Drew and a few others we are getting a fun team to watch. It is time for Jag fans and fans of the city of Jacksonville to go and support our team. I am very pleased with the team so far and can't wait for the next game.

Yes how dumb, were having trouble with black outs and they run a story like this, and that guys says he dosent want to spend 40 dollars at the concession stands. What the heck is he eating, eat before the game, tailgate dumb a$$. As far as the crowd must be a mistake somewhere sure looked like the largest this season.

^I was very disappointed to see the tickets distributed and the gate numbers.  I could have sworn we were more full than the previous games.  Oh well; 43K did the work of 67K yesterday.  We were loud and relentless.  On the game-winning and -ending drives the stands in my section (104) were shaking.  It could have more to do with the 4 rows in front of me being steel plate instead of concrete, but still it was impressive.  I've never felt that in JMS before.

Based on how it looked on TV from Virginia I was expecting to see 50-55k as the tickets distributed.  Maybe CBS was doing a nice job of focusing on particularly full sections or something, but whenever I saw a panoramic shot I was focusing on the parts of the stadium I know to be emptier, and they seemed noticeably fuller than usual.  And the noise level sounds like plenty on TV as well.  Thankfully, I'll be there to contribute to the noise level for the Dolphin game.

Well when your own local news runs a story about how you can get around the Black Outs, don't expect the bandwagon wheel to get back on anytime soon. Just when you think something that involves this city has reached its limits, they take it to a new level. After all the Jag organization, the mayor, etc have done to get people to go the game and your own local news does something like this, unbelievable.

Winning will certainly help, but the Jags need the Club and the box seats full, to stay. And that requires corporations. Many of the corps that bought these have packed up and moved on with consolidation. I like what Terrell Hogan has done, but we need every employer with the funds for Club seats to do the same. This is a corporation buying movement. It was the same in 1993 and it has to be the same ground swell now.

this past sunday was my first jag game and im bitten. ive been to a few giants games in nj and its no comparison. Old giants stadium is closer to the roman coliseum than jax municipal, giant tickets are acquired through inheritance. This is why many out of towners come to jax to support their teams, jag prices allow them to cover airfare and a nice time at the beach.
jag ticket prices have to be the best value in the nfl, and its easy to avoid any parking fees.
Go Jags:)

We have a good chance in every game we play for the rest of the season, we beat Houston, Miami and Cleveland and we'll see what happens against Indy at home and in New England. The season is not over by a long shot, especially with the way the AFC standings are right now. GO JAGS!!!!!!!!!!!

I would imagine the Jags aren't likely to make the playoffs this season. We would really need to win out to have a shot at the wildcard and the remaining games are some of the toughest yet. I hope we can win some of the remaining home games... especially against the Colts.

Regardless of the overall record I like where the team is heading and find plenty of excitement with or without the playoffs.

I was not expecting much this season, I figured the jags would be 8-8 at seasons end. if they can get any higher than that they will have exceeded my expectations. But that game yesterday was just horrible, kind of reminded me of the seahawks game, everything they did ended up being wrong. But it's a young team and next year they should be up to the challenge. Hopefully no more 1st round busts.

Probably have to go 4-1 down the stretch to get in the playoffs, or hope for upsets, or both.

Denver has to play Indianapolis and Philadelphia, but its other games should be softballs (KC twice and Oakland).

Baltimore and Pittsburgh have to play each other again, and they both draw Green Bay and Oakland.  Beyond that, Pitt has Miami and Cleveland, Balt has Chicago and Detroit.

At least one of those three teams is going to end up 10-6, possibly two.

No need to give up hope yet, though.  Houston and Miami are winnable games, I find it hard to imagine we'll blow it against Cleveland, Indianapolis isn't indomitable and may have a bunch of starters resting after home field is secured.

I don't think yesterday's game was nearly as bad as the Seattle game.  There were obvious failures of execution, especially on the O-line, and there were clear matchup problems with their tight ends, but the offense moved the ball well most of the day and Scobee had a freak bad day.  I don't think Garrard was sloppy either; there just wasn't much he could do with the entire gold rush pouring in on him at once.  I actually was pretty happy with the game planning and can't fault the coaching staff.  Being short handed in the secondary was a given going in, and there were actually a couple of very clever play calls, notably the two fake delayed handoffs/passes to Thomas in the third quarter.

Considering Peter King is on a crusade to crush the spirit of Jacksonville and move the team to London so he gets free overseas travel, and generally seems more focused on coffee and politics and finding a way to bear Brett Favre's children than he is on football, I wouldn't take anything he has to say particularly seriously.
