Veronica Dame and I were in five points today chatting with Jack Shad about the success of the Horror Film Festival when he pointed out that the announcement just kind of mysteriously appeared in the window.
We had lunch at Hovan, and while we were there, ran into Jim Draper and his son on break from the new studio at the old Whiteway Delicatessen. The opening went well, and we should have an article up soon about the event.
Five points is such a lovely wonderful place at times. So many nice neighbors and cool shops and things opening.

It is nice that independent shops open not just star bucks and chains.
5 Points is a cool place pretty much 99% of the time. Love it and I love the wine festival that is coming up soon, should be nice and cool for it.
Not to hijack this thread, but when is that?

I was wondering the same thing...
Found this online.
7th Annual
Riverside WineFest
Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009
6:00p to 9:00p

Thanks Traveller!
David Joudi of Riverside Wine and Liquors (the main sponsor of the WineFest, BTW) said that the people who were working on Deco Bistro were spending a lot of money from what he was seeing going in there so it won't be a clone of the filthy mess that was Raglands. Will be good to see something fresh going in.
Five Points is always has interesting turnover of the businesses there. Some anchors have been there forever, but the experiments keep it fresh.
Thanks Traveller! Kudos to Riverside Wine and Liquors, they do a great service to the community!
Perhaps a MetroJax table there for Stephen Dare to sign autographs?
The annual wine festival is one of my most favorite things to do in Jacksonville. Those samples add up! Imagine 300 wines - a sample is 1 ounce. If you sample all of them that's the equivalent of like 60 glasses or 15 bottles of wine total! For 30 bucks! ;D
I hope the "deco bistro" isn't the attempt at an upscale sports bar that was the owner's brain storm when they let Tammy go. She was about the only reason that my wife and I went there. Although the food was pretty good also. Without all of Jim's art and Tammy behind the bar, it was never the same and if it is the same owners, I'll have a hard time supporting the establishment.
Florida, Not the same owner. Not a sports bar concept.
"Deco Bistro" You've got to be kidding! I'm embarrassed for 5 points. Hope you haven't ordered the sign yet. The word Bistro and numbered names hasn't been used in any major city for the last 5 years. Please use some creativity with a name and reflect it in the food. Keep it affordable so I can visit weekly not yearly and for god's sake spare us from yet another mustard yellow overpriced farce called a bistro.
For those of you that never escape Duval Co.
Bistro
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bistro, in its original Parisian incarnation, a small restaurant serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. Bistros are defined mostly by the foods they serve. Slow-cooked foods like braised meats are typical. Bistro patrons do not necessarily expect professional service or printed menus.
Gonna miss Raglands deep fried eggplant sticks.... ooooh. :) :-[
I had heard that this was only supposed to take a few weeks to get up and going... anyone hear a status update on this?? Its been more than a few weeks....
There is a hand made sign in the window that says that they will open on Dec. 8. The paper was down off the window during the Riverside Wine Festival (really fantastic BTW!) and the interior is really clean looking in design. There wasn't any furniture though so they are going to really have to hustle to make that date. Maybe they are expecting a deliver this week.
Off the thread a bit: One of the wonderful food vendors that were there during the Winefest was Richard Grenimeyer (sp?) previewing some of his new dishes for his Blue Fish remake of Sterlings. Good to see him back in Jacksonville. He and Liz were the first chefs to bring big city quality, sophisticated food to Jacksonville at Kaldi's in Avondale many years ago when all you could get was barbecue and fried seafood.
Hope the food matches the quality of the decor! Five Points/Riverside is really going upscale in the dining opportunities. The Row, Fu Hao Bistro, Cozy Tea, now Deco Bistro.
Heard members of a woman's group coming out of Fu Hao on Friday night a week ago exclaiming about the beautiful presentations and quality of the food. Some of them had even taken pictures of their dishes.
Went to Fu Hao about a month ago. It was great.
Fu Hao ROCKS!
What is cozy tea???
In the middle of the 5 Points strip on the same side as Fu Hao is a lunch only tea room run by an Indian lady who makes some of the most dynamite samosas you have ever put in your mouth. She does a high tea that would make your grandmother swoon. It is a piece of Victorian London set down in the middle of Jacksonville.
If we have any Mandarin or Cantonese speakers on the forum; doesn't Fu Hao mean something like "great food"? Try their curry duck. Huge portion that you can't possibly finish until you do anyway.
It has become tradition to take my mother to Cozy Tea whenever she's in town - Almost antebellum - on par with places that you'd expect to find in Charleston or Savannah. I never know what home made soup they'll have, but they haven't missed yet. A definite plus for the area.
my wife loves the cozy tea place. good fresh food, however its definitely on the frou frou side of things.
Is the owner of cozy tea still doing friday night Indian dinners? Appox a year ago, my wife & I enjoyed a fantastic 5 course meal that was a dinner & movie promo for $28 each. We literally couldn't each any more and since the movie was about to start, the owner packaged up dessert for us.
Sorry... couldn't EAT any more
