Am I the only one who lives downtown and is sick of the neverending fireworks? I mean ok I get the 4th of July, but Sunday the 8th at 10pm and now tuesday the 10th at 10pm. You'd figure a city that is short on cash and threatening all sorts of public safety crises would cut back on Fireworks, but not jax baby... every friggen night it seems like.
WTF? did they have leftovers from the 4th? was there anyone even down there at this time of night? I mean if I lived in one of those high rises I'd be pretty damn pissed at this point.
Enough!
I think this was from the convention downtown, some religious convention.
I was wondering what was going on last night. :'(
Does the city pay for fireworks shows that are put on for conventions?
Don't know. If the city does pay for them, that would be a great place to start slicing the budget. They put on a pretty good show, but doing too much is overkill.

Nope, they aren't here till Thurs: http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/071107/met_183632133.shtml
must have been Wild and Crazy Tuesday Downtown night or something.
If not the religious convention, then maybe the Indian youth group convention? Whatever, agree entirely they are being overused.
I was wondering when the newbies living Downtown would start complaining about the fireworks. I actually was thinking this last night as I was in my house hearing the fireworks in Springfield. All I can say is if you dont like noise and disruptions do not move Downtown.
I think its more of a wasteful spending of tax dollars than a noise issue, if the city is funding all of these fireworks shows.
I do not think that the city pays for all of the fireworks we see or hear Downtown. I know at the Sun's game they have fireworks every Friday night, I do not think the City funds those. It is an interesting question though.
CBS news was showing a live shot of downtown that night and noticed the fireworks but nobody new what they were for. :)
hey I don't mind the disruptions at all. I even like the Suns fireworks they're all of five minutes and they are privately funded. However, the last two fireworks shows downtown, the one on Sunday and now Tuesday nights after 10pm, well those were actually 20 minutes long and consisted of some huge fireworks with a giant finale that was nothing short of ridiculous.
Some of us have to get up early and go to bed early and while I am definitely not one to complain about weekend nights or holidays Sunday night and Tuesday night is too much regardless of whether there is a convention in town or not.
I'm sure its not even downtown resident "newbies" my friends in St. Nicholas complained about it too!
Well, growing up in riverside and now living in Springfield I guess I came to get used to it. I mean for me it was either gunshots or fireworks. Last night as I was trying to go to sleep, I was hoping it was fireworks and not gunshots. I kind of like hearing them. It makes think at least someone is having an enjoyable night Downtown. They really dont bother me, but they do bother my dog.
It does seem a bit overdone....but I enjoy it just the same....the downtown fireworks are visible from one of my bedrooms, and the Suns fireworks from the other bedroom.
I looked to see what all the firewoks were from too! I looked online to see what event was going on but couldn't find anything. From Parks at the Cathedral, they looked to be fired from near the Berkman tower???
They were fired from a barge.
