This may be a silly question, but thought this might be the best place to get an answer. Being new to Springfield, should I be expecting a lot of kids trick-or-treating, and if so what is a good guestimate on how many I should plan for? I want to be sure I have enough candy on hand if they come knocking.
My experience has been hit and miss...depends on your individual block more than anything. For a couple of years there was a list of "safe" houses so that kids only went to neighbors who had volunteered to participate. This year the Mommies Group is having a party in Klutho Park so there may not be many kids wandering around.
I don't think I've ever given out my full supply of candy (so I make sure to buy something I like). But I have very few little ones in my immediate area.
i was going to ask the same question on the SPAR forum, but it's still not up. I heard about the list of kid-friendly houses and planned on signing up......but i guess not....
That's true, it's totally hit and miss and much depends on the section you live in...some don't have quite as many little ones. The mommies group has always given a list of safe houses...but with the spar board being disabled, I don't know where one can get that information.
last year I think I had maybe 10 kids at the most. It was very dull. Still have left over candy.
A small bag of "fun size" snickers it is then. Thanks y'all.
The more Decked out your house is the more trick or treaters you will have, last year I lost count at about 150 and went though 4 large bags of candy
I gave out my 3 mega bags of candy last year. of coruse east 7th street had a bunch of houses decked out in halloween gear, so that atracted some boys and ghouls.
really? I live near E. 7th & Market and my neighbors said hardly anyone came last year.....i don't think they decorated though.....we'll be ready though!
We gave out 4 bags on Silver and ran out by 8:00
we got them by the trailer load, truck load, car load and all kids walking. If your house is decked out you draw the the little ones like a moth to a porch light.
my house was all decked out last year and i had almost no one on East 3rd st.
I was wondering the same thing.
I have a friend in Riverside that typically does not hand out candy because she gets so many uncostumed teenagers and not so many little kids. So she keeps the porch lights off or goes out.
I sort of expected the same thing in SPR unless you are part of something organized.
That's true there are quite a few un-costumed teenagers. My wife purchased a bunch of costume makeup after halloween last year and was going to offer face painting to them this year but we are not doing trick or treat this year do to a family emergence.
The mommies used to do registered safe house lists, and a map. The womans club, and then several individuals would then do hay rides to the locations on the map.
It worked out well, except that the hayrides were never able to hit everyone, and in the end people ended up upset.
They hayride also would show up and clear out all of your candy!

Yeah, but it's Halloween Central over on Market north of 7th this year, so I think we may draw a crowd.
I don't think I did candy last year...I was at Shanty with JFK, Jesus, and Sid n' Nancy.
I live on Boulevard, and its not as dense as the rest of the neighborhood. So for me it has varied year to year. Last year was busy, but for about 3 years before that....very few kids. I'd just be prepared for either.
well, the SPAR board says it will be back up in a few weeks. guess they are doing some major changes.
so no list of candy-houses i guess.

You want to see Trick and Treaters, come to Edgewood Ave in Avondale. I swear someone buses these kids in, because many, I never see, but once a year. I always like asking the high school students "Aren't you a little old to be asking for candy"? Never had an egg on the house yet, but we must get 200-300 kids along our street every year. With tough times, I expect even more.
Sad to see moms wheel up their 1-month olds and ask for candy. Shouldn't you be at home with your newborn instead of out soliciting candy? Sad to see.
They ceased listing houses, the whole place is considered safe, with parents along of course for the youngsters, which is nessessary anywhere.
I get between 100 and 150, they do come in from the surrounding area also

But in fairness Chris, everyone seeks your house out. We all know where the good candy is :-D
Dan B that is so sweet. We have loaded up this year, usually we snitch it before time but Angus will not let us touch it - it is for tricatreat
You better not be stealing our candy! :-) I happen to know for a fact that you have enough cookie dough to make several dozen cookies! :-D haha
FYI. This is on the calender on the SPAR home page: http://sparcouncil.org/Mambo/
