It didn't help that two Redboxes opened within a hundred yards of it.  Not to mention Netflix and cable/satellite on-demand movies.

Netflix is hurting it

so is going to the store and never finding a new release you want(xbox 360 for me anyway) and the over the top rentle prices

still would hate to see them close, I like going and getting a game once in a while to try it out and sometimes they have really cool deals on movies and games(used) and poster..thingys

True but netflix and the Redboxes days are coming also. Right now the Internet or the cell phone companies will make it so easy to download a movie via the computer or cell that we will be billed even if we don't have cable or Sat/TV the cost of a new picture. Or we can go to the local Library and get a disc for free.

Universal Studios recently told Redbox that it was going to allow them to rent the releases of new movies, 45 days after they were released in the stores. The studios are hurting for cash, and they see Netflix and Redbox as the major culprits. Look for the studios to push release dates to both companies to later and later, to satisfy the studios thurst for more profit.

Wonder what is going to happen to the Blockbuster down the road on 17, near the Shell Station in Fairfax Manor.

Quite a few blockbusters have closed the one at Blanding and Wilson has been gone for a while.  Lot easier to get them from red box or through netflixs.  Times change

I have had Netflix in the past. They have a great collection of hard to find documentaries and older movies.

Blockbuster's deserves to die a slow, painful death over their late fees and refusal to swap out copies of damaged movies and games. Redbox is so much more convenient. Blockbuster is still holding onto a 1980s business model, which was great when video was the hot new thing, but why eat up all that real estate (and spend the money maintaining aging buildings) when you can provide the same service from a vending machine, or better yet, the internet?

I do feel bad for the employees... hopefully they'll bounce back.

I heard this as well, but what if redbox just bought them from a retailer and put them in their box.

Blockbuster has changed their model. They have the the "Blue Box" sprouting up in almost every Publix which are IMO easier to use than the Red Box and more convenient than Mc Donalds or Walgreens for most people.. They also have a netflix type model where you can use mail or in store rental / returns. My guess is that these avenues for rentals has driven down the demand for "brick & mortar" locations and they're thinning out a bit.

Redbox is buying movies from retailers. I think we are in the middle of a paradigm shift and you will see the best model survive. Blockbuster is already putting out its own kiosks as well, and that may well be the future for them. I think downloading or streaming movies may or may not be the way to go. I, like a  lot of people, still love getting that hard copy of a movie in the mail or out of a machine. The old brick and mortar  movie rental store will be extinct very soon. Say goodbye to a good friend.

Quotewhat if redbox just bought them from a retailer and put them in their box.

They can for now, but what about the penalties if you get caught? The studios own the rights to the sale of the movies, so anyone doing it legit, will have to pay to do so.

In the end, downloads from the net, just like songs, will be the future of movies. I saw an interesting article recently about how a T1 (1.5 MB) is a dinosaur these days, and I believe that 10 MB of download will soon be the standard for most homes, or at least 5 MB is today. By next year, I would not be shocked to see 25 or 50 MB offered in download speeds, using Fiber that was installed back in the 90s.

Brick and mortar's movie sale days are numbered, just like the Turtles and Tower Records were numbered.

Sad, but i don't think they can compete with RedBox/Netflix/On Demand. Personally i love the redbox, its quick and convenient.

It is sad to see anything closing now; however, just think of all of the mom and pop video stores that Blockbuster, busted when they opened their doors.

Blockbuster as a whole isn't going anywhere. They're already doing the things the Net-Flix and Redbox are doing and they'll move on to downloads when demand calls for it.

In addition to the below, there is also a report of one BB closing in Ponte Vedra.

Four Blockbuster stores closing in Duval
19 Metro Jacksonville stores will remain

Dallas-based Blockbuster Inc. (NYSE: BBI) on Monday began clearing out four of its 23 Jacksonville-area locations and a company spokesman said he expects them to be closed by January.

Randy Hargrove said all of the inventory in the stores â€" including the first-run DVDs in their stock â€" is being sold. Members at the four stores will be directed to nearby Blockbuster locations, where they will be offered discounted rentals, Hargrove said.

Each store has two other Blockbuster stores within a 10-minute drive, he said. The stores are at 5115 Normandy Blvd., 5501 Roosevelt Blvd., 14444 Beach Blvd. and 10063 San Jose Blvd.

The Associated Press reported in September that the company had reported to the Security Exchange Commission that it may close about 20 percent of its 4,356 stores in the United States, opting to instead set up 10,000 DVD rental kiosks in other stores. The company is trying to reverse financial losses and get ahead of rivals Netflix Inc. and Redbox, which rent videos via the Internet, mail and vending machines.

The company is reviewing 810 to 960 stores and may close them, the filing noted. There has been no formal list of closures, but about 200 already have been closed this year, Hargrove said.

They should've closed the one on Old St. Augustine instead of the San Jose location. The OSA Rd location is a b*tch to get in/out of and the San Jose location gets much more traffic.

Brick and mortar costs more than a vending machine, but I'm telling you download costs even less than a vending machine.

People will be watching movies on their phones, won't need the discs at all.

And running mom and pop stores out of business. Hopefully Wal Mart meets the same fate but I doubt it.

Small rental stores were the best. Even though they didn’t carry thousands of copies of the same new releases, they were usually cheaper and had lots of variety & weird offbeat movies. Oh and you didn’t have to apply for a 2nd to become a member.

FYI, Walmart started out as a "mom and pop".  One store in Bentonville, AK.  :D  What do you think was the difference between them and other mom & pops?

Apple, Google, and most big companies were mom & pops before being corporate giants.  Could it be survival of the fittest?

I liked those dusty old places where that strange middle-aged white guy always hid the best movies for his friends behind the counter.

And they didn't scream "WELCOME" when you walked in the door.

Haha, I loved the one that was first in the old Winn Dixie plaza on Main and then moved over next to Food Lion. They always gave you fresh popcorn and they had those weird chinese hacked Nintendo games that had like 30 games on one cart.

I just do Blu-ray now and I can't ever find the new releases in the Red Box kiosks but Blockbuster usually has a good selection. I'm glad the one on Roosevelt by FCCJ is staying open, I always liked the staff there- they're friendly and most of them actually know their movies.
