Crash Trash and Weekend Bash! Riverside, Friday
(http://photos.metrojacksonville.com/photos/689278960_mG6fB-O.jpg)
The Crash Trash And Weekend Bash! staff is growing by leaps and bounds, although hardly fast enough to suit the ambitious plans of its editor. This installment takes the lovely club ingenue, Jennifer Browning along with Clubreview Dinosaur Christopher Byron Phillips and musical waif, Jordan Rutter and pits them against the hellish might of the Riverside Nightlife scene. Stephen Dare moderates as they are joined by dangerous club performer, Karrissa Wade.
Come with us as we explore all of the various nooks and crannies of Riverside, Avondale and Five Points, and discover that the neighborhood clusters of walkable neighborhoods and communities of interest offer some of the best nightlife opportunities and experiences in the city.

So basically, never go to incahoots. No problem!
Hey Brett, wanna go to In Cahoots tonight?
Cashbah should have minus 8395825 points because..they are ALWAYS out of something we are looking for. Seriously, Steph told the waitress one time that they should rename the bar "Sorry, We're out of that".. I went there for wino wed.. they supposedly have 3 bottles to choose from.. the had none and the only one they were willing to substitute in was a nasty white blendo of some sort. The next time I went.. no strongbow and none of the tobacco flavors I wanted...and they weren't blue mist or plum either! This has happened every time for the past like.. 2 months!!
Um, so yeah.. there is my little Mandy rant about Casbah.. =D I'd love it if they would actually do inventory and keep things in stock..
I <3 Walkers. The fruit spritzer things and the champagne mojitos are awwwwwesome! I could probably drink 82475925 of them.
Ah, I was going to say the area it's located doesn't seem all that bad. It's within walking distance from my work and I've never felt like I've had to be more on my guard around here than normal.
But it still sounds like some of the people there could have been nicer to you guys.
Mandy let's face it, Laylas has better hookahs. Now if they would only not charge so much for drinks.
Yeah....umm, wow.
Casbah is out of everything all the time... beer, wine and hookahs.
And they will only give you 2 sets of coals and they bring them early. In other words, you don't get to finish all your tobacco because you are out of fire.
Layla's and Al Him (not a fan.... for now) will bring you coals till the tobacco dies. I mean seriously, 2 coals costs all of about 50 cents.
But yea. Layla's prices are best for happy hour/specials... either that or split a pitcher of beer.
Props to metjax for this set of nightclub reviews. It has a more objective point of view than the previous two, sticking closer to the formula you guys originally came up with, as opposed to giving 50 bonus points because of a hunky bartender :P
The only discrepancy I see is the claim of the metro being the biggest night club around. Maybe that's true for the core area, but what about the mega clubs of Arlington & Southside? Plush, The Globe and (not sure if this one's still open) Bourbon St Station. Those places are massive.
What ever happened with the slapping? Will that be on a future update?
3.4 FOR WALL STREET? Bite your tongues (fingers?). A genuine dive bar and an institution. I'll be there tonight, waiting to die.
i agree 100%
first time in years i have been to the eclipse and you end up with a picture of my drunk ass with my beer in one hand and my mouth wide open....oh god!!! take it down....lol i have tons of good ones from that night....i didnt' even know yall were coming!!
Five Points, Park and King, Post and King, the Avondale district. They have become one of the things that makes Jacksonville itself wonderful.
[/quote]
amen steven!!!
hi.. okay.. eclipse needs a better raiting than that.. the drinks where definatley strong, the music was amazing.. and i have 100 more pics to chose from if you would take that one down please!!! oli was also there that night.. and if i saw you out i would buy you a drink as a big thanks! :) .. oh.. have you guys been to the beaches yet? shanshan and I can help you with those reviews...

I think that what they were saying david. It was the biggest in the Riverside Crawl.
Thanks for the props man! This was a lot of fun to put together and edit! Im sure the lovely Miss Browning and the rest of the crew will be on. surely they have rolled out of bed by now.
Speaking of, how far out will the club crawl reach? It would be...interesting to see a review of a place like Plush or the Globe, (all of which I haven't been to in nearly half decade). But maybe as a last resort, when you run out of places around here. Jax Beach seems like it should be one of next areas on the list, there's no shortage of places to review there.

QuoteChristopher Byron Phillips tried the Raspberry Wheat beer with the strange disclaimer, "It's not very good, it doesn't come highly recommended." He mumbled something about it being sweet with a bad aftertaste.
The team perused the specialty drink menu, but decided to leave some of their suggested drink combinations to more adventurous drinkers.
One particularly revolting sounding concoction is called the "Chocolate Covered Raspberry" which is Guiness and Lambic together.... interesting. Personally, it sounds like a bit of a stretch. I would suggest Raspberry Flavored Retching....
As it turned out Jordan Rutter is an old hand at the Casbah and started discussing the hookah's, apparently they're out of tobacco flavors quite frequently. Specifically, (and with tart disatisfaction) he mentioned that the Blue Mist and Plum flavors were out the most.
One a side note, I've actually tried the Chocolate Covered Raspberry and I think it's pretty tasty. The one at Kickback's is better though b/c they use one of the chocolate stouts instead of Guinness.

Oh I love Layla's hookahs (I almost wrote hookers there, wtf?). I loved Layla's when we had Nick hooking us up! Now I spend $40 when I'm there each time. ::sigh::
Stephen.. I will get them on flicker asap.. once dj free played duran duran.. I knew it was gonna be a good night... :)

Oh wow, I can't even imagine walking back into Plush or Bourbon Street... but I do sometimes wonder what they are like now. It's been years!
I wonder if we could get the old 98 crew to go on a nice little reminiscing trip to Plush..hehe I'd be interested to see if we look super old compared to the rest of the crowd or if it's aged at all..
Er, and by 98 crew I mean Rachel and Brett could come too, of course.. =D
And since it's 98, after Plush it's on to Evolutions from 2 - 6 am.
I would also recommend spending more time in less places. While you can get a sense of some bars within seconds, I don't feel that spending less then 30 mins in some bars is sufficient to really appreciate them. I love the articles as I don’t get out much anymore and it is good to see the variety that Jacksonville has to offer.
Yes we should be spending more time in less places.....I think Stephen was trying to challenge us....
Ooh, and just for the record, I'm not semi-conservative or on the prowl (although I may look the part)
Where to next Stephen?
Yeah a good example of this is Wallstreet. I've always really liked the place but it can be almost depressing if you get there too early.

They actually had a good time at InCahoots, I think Jennifer was just a little scared of the neighborhood and the consequences of photography!
InCahoots was a lot of fun.... I just didn't like the neighborhood that much, and the consequences of my bathroom shots were quite unnerving, but, it's okay. :)
Good reviews! I'd like to see an address or something with each of the bars/clubs though. Amazingly enough, there are some places that were reviewed that I have never even heard of. Ok, maybe just one place so far: InCahoots. I gathered that it was a gay bar, which is probably why I have never heard of it, but just as an example I have no idea where that place is. Just saying that addresses of these places would be nice!
One other thing would be nice would to have something specifying things like orientation. Id hate to plan a night out at a place just to get there and find out that it is a gay bar... (no offense obviously, but, well... you know.) :) It seems like there are some major things that should be specified.

Adding the addresses is a great idea! Thank you!
hah what's going on with the logo to the crash/trash weekend bash article? scooby doo, hellboy? hahahhahaha. Nice! I like it.
Word has spread! "The JB Bathroom Cam" has inadvertently helped clean up restrooms all over Jax!
Club owners beware! Your bathroom could be next onstage. ......(Wow, Kickbacks was pretty bad..)
QuoteWow, Kickbacks was pretty bad
It normally is, sorry Steve, but how freakin hard is it for you or Mikey to clean the damn bathroom, or make it part of the staff's responsibility. Sure people pull items off the wall or punch holes in the wall, but dude, your clientele is not the normal Ritz-Carlton patron. The bathrooms were cleaner when Pete and Rebecca ran the place, fix the bathrooms, or we might as well use the street as our toilet.....wait.....some at 2 am do that....not good.
I want to address your review of InCahoots Nightclub. I've been going to InCahoots for a couple years now, and have a problem with a couple of the things you said about it and the Gay bar community as a whole. First of all, your comment about this bar being on the corner of "Crackrock & Attempted Auto Theft" was WAY OUT OF LINE & inaccurate. I'm sure the businesses of BCBS, Fidelity Bank, Everbank, The Art Gallery, The Daycare or the other Businesses wouldn't appreciate your slanderous comments about their neighborhood! The streets are very well lit up & the club always has 1-2 security guards in the parking lots to show you where to park and direct you to the club. How is that a "Dark Creepy Street"? Why were you so scared? Next you mentioned next the food vendor.... well just so you know, me and many other InCahoots regulars have been known to stop by there on other nights after parting elsewhere just to get that "fried" food you mentioned!! It's awesome! Next, how about an accuracy check.... Last time I checked there were 4 bars there not the 3 you mentioned. You had to walk right past it to get to the bathroom. Which is another problem I have! Your article made mention of the owner coming after you to see what was in your camera, like it was a bad thing. I feel reassurred that she did come after you and wasn't ok about the fact that you were taking pictures in the bathroom! (Now that to me is creepy!) Next time you should Let the owner know that you are taking a picture of the bathrooms and have an employee there so you don't scare the hell out of the customers like you did! In Closing I have 2 questions??? Why is there an 18 yr old on your staff reviewing clubs when he's barely old enough to get in them.... What experience can he possible have? AND WHAT THE HELL IS HOMEFRIED GAY DISCO HOUSE?? Inquiring Gay minds wanna know??
This page was forwarded to me from a friend about Incahoots, and i felt the need to respond.
Lets start off by saying that Incahoots got the highest rating along with Kickbacks of all the clubs that were rated in riverside. How is that your comments were so derogatory? Your assessment of the location and the parking set up was really over-dramatized(drama queen???). This review seems very unprofessional. You referred to Karrissa as a bitch for doing her job and giving your barely- legal colleague a canned soda as is their policy. Him being thin skinned about his age shows he has no business in a club to begin with.
As far as the owner's way of handling your whole bathroom trauma, i applaud her diligence in ensuring her patron's privacy, and frankly i would be quite upset to walk out of a stall and find someone taking pictures of the bathroom that i was in.
And I too am curious what home fried gay disco house is? The music is awesome and the dance floor is always packed. By the way. the shrimp, chicken strips, wings and pork chops ROCK!!!!!!!
No such thing as bad publicity!
So are all the owners now aware of the reviewers coming to check out their bar?

Hannah,
I'd like to know where the idea that I was taking pictures of people in the bathrooms came from. Have you ever seen a picture of people in the bathrooms in these articles? She was walking into the bathrooms, not the stall. Perhaps you shouldn't assume so much.

Jennifer.....
I'd say Jennifer that the idea came from you in your article!! (or do you not read the crap you print) You yourself said a customer "Said with FEAR & OUTRAGE".... "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" So if a customer had a serious problem with it while your doing it... why wouldn't the owner have a problem?? If she had to come to you upset about it then I'm sure there were problems that others complained to her as well.. Did you ask?
You handled the whole thing unprofessionally and aren't woman enough to admit it. Instead you try to make the owner look bad to cover your mess! Then jump on your readers for defending the right thing!?!?
So clearly the assumption was on your part that it's OK to go in a bar & start taking pictures in a bathroom without knowledge or permission of the Establishment. Or at least an employee there to reassure the customers there that it's OK. Bottom line... Your commentary is unprofessional & rude.
Stephendare
Whether Karissa is a writer on your staff or not, I feel it was unnecessary to "print" the bitch comment when she was clearly doing her job. You say this is for the consumers not the businesses.... that's great Really! But how is calling an employee a Bitch for doing her job a help to me as a consumer? How is bad mouthing the "Fried Meat & Seafood" they serve, Just because your a vegan, a help to me?
The club did get a great rating as it should have, but the rude & nasty (that you called funny??) commentary was totally unnecessary!! How about Teaching your girl some professionalism. This is a published article... not her personal diary!! JUST MY OPINION AS A CONSUMER!
Go get 'em Jennifer, don't take any crap from them!
Stephen - Agreed, I'd like to see you take the show on the road to the bars mentioned in the Times Union for having guns, namely the Silver FOXX on Beaver Street.

I guess you won't, considering most of the clubs in Riverside don't allow camera's. Sad to say, but Not everyone is able to be out of the closet. One wrong picture posted online could cost them their job or their family relationships. But outside of the drama asscoiated with the reviewer, you'd probably have a blast there if you ever did decide to check it out! It's a really fun place. ;D
and as far as incahoots goes, I have been there MANY times and not to long ago, guess less then 3 weeks ago. Never impressed, actually its always dissapointing and the review was nicer then what I would have said about it.
I'm not here to judge, so I won't.

I have. Getting shot at plush would be what I consider a mercy killing. I’d rather be getting wheeled out on a stretcher than have to spend an evening at that god awful place. Bad music, lame crowd, armed drunks (apparently). I think I’d rather choose death.
Wow Stephendare!! You sure do like the sound of your own voice (in this case writing) don't you!!
You say I'm a unreconstructed literalist because I disagree with the you & the professionalism of your writer?
WHATEVER .... Calling me names because you can't handle criticism is pathetic!!
But that's OK, I've seen your writing/responses to others that have had critical responses to your other weekend bash reviews and you did the same to them!
And, you saying that your not sure how these reviews will help us as a consumer is kinda funny since wasn't your exact words a few sections up "The crash trash and weekend bash is a review article, written for consumers not businesses. . So your writing it for us but no clue how it's supposed to help us... HMMM OK????
I've know Karissa for 13 years now, and I agree that calling her a Bitch in fun or in show is def part of the norm, but in this case it wasn't at the reviewer's expense (as you stated) , it was at her expense for doing her job. Twist it how you want, but the facts are obvious!
You say the objective part comes in the ratings, but you of all people MR LITERARY MAN should know that words can hurt much more than numbers. Especially when they are inaccurate and overdramatized.
I'm sure that you and Jennifer are both are really nice people ... AS AM I.... And, It really wasn't my intention to turn this into this mess that it has become, but when I as a consumer see unprofessional & innaccurate things written about a club that I, ALONG WITH NAMY OTHERS LOVE (which is why they are usually slammed), then I felt the need a a COMSUMER to respond.
Although I highly disagree with you, & the way you handle things, I do wish you all well.
THE "RATING" THEY GOT WAS AWESOME - THANKS FOR AT LEAST THAT!!!
THE CLUB IS AWESOME - THE LOTS ARE SAFE - THE MUSIC IS AWESOME- THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS
THE DRINKS ARE STRONG - THE CLUB IS PACKED & CLEARLY THE OWNER IS LOOKING OUT FOR US!
DEF MY KIND OF CLUB!!!! ;D
Ok so I have two maybe three things that bother me about the “review†of incahoots…
The first major thing would have to be the 18 year old “cohort†that you have working for you. I was there that night and over heard the comment made by karrissa, I guess he’ll think twice before trying to get served under age again. Why the hell would you try and order 3 drinks when only two of you are of age???
All of you r lucky you weren’t thrown out for trying to get a minor served or is that part of your jobs to see if you can get away with it then award and extra bonus point???
Do any of you realize what exactly would have happen if for some reason you had managed to get him a drink? If any kind of law enforcement had witness him getting served or drinking underage not only would all of you had gone to jail but the club would be shut down and the owner and all the staff would have gone to jail as well and not to mention her losing the club and the entire staff losing their jobs… hardly seems worth it for comedic review. It’s a good thing incahoots has a staff that has zero tolerance for underage drinking…
The second thing is the bathroom ordeal…..
I understand it maybe a part of your job to take pictures of the bathrooms but to judge the adverse reactions to it seems a little pompous… if I had walked in to the bathroom anywhere and saw someone taking random photos dam right I would have done the same thing its not some “unwritten code†its just common sense and just plain weird!
I was also outside about to order food (which by the way IS amazing!!!) when I witnessed this so called “aggressive and forbidding†moment. They did not “chase you to the street†you were standing by the doors?? Come on! Really????? In my opinion I would have done the same thing. It’s within her rights as owner to question why anyone would want to be taking pictures of any thing to do with the establishment ….
p.s. there are 4 bars with 5 bartenders not 3…

I am a good friend and like to make sure they get home safely and not drive drunk when they go ;)
I can be just as happy with a few close friends and a bottle of wine or a drink as well has out dancing at a club or talking to random people at a bar
Look, i was standing there.. Why would you order 3 "house speciality's"? Was there some else with you guys? That was the whole reason Karrissa said what she said? and the fact that this Jordon kid had helped Karrissa at TSI is irrelevant..
Funny, I don't see any of the myriad of patrons from Wall Street on here frothing over the low score.
Oh yeah, no one cares.
Wall Street rocks! I had not been in there until this past weekend, but that place is good times. Plus I won $25 in a costume contest there.
Does anyone know if they have a website? I could not find one, but the person who gave me my prize took a picture and said it would go up on their website.
It should be up on the Facebook page.

Yeah these people defending Incahoot aren’t really doing the place any favors. They’re just giving it a vibe of having an overly sensitive and somewhat hostile clientele.
^ Just like the folks who defended Moon River did wonders for their reputation...
Take these criticisms in stride folks. If a college girl doesn't like your bar, so be it. Granted, she is a writer for a well read website, but who cares.
QuoteYeah these people defending Incahoot aren't really doing the place any favors. They're just giving it a vibe of having an overly sensitive and somewhat hostile clientele.
I have to disagree. Sensitive & Somewhat Hostile is by far what INCAHOOTS IS!!
It's prob one of the friendliest NON Cliquish bars in Jax,
with an awesome Vibe (also stated in the article) And you must
not have read the actual article...
InCahoots was given the 2ND highest rating out of all (along with the Fabulous Kickbacks). It's not about being sensitive to the review, The problem that
several are having is that:
(1) The slanderous description of the neighborhood, when really all that is around there is Major corporate companies & a security patrolled parking. That could seriously hurt future NEW partons from wanting to come out, over a lie!
(2) The reviewer tried to get the the 18 yr old a cocktail (which could shut the bar down... wow) then called the employee a bitch for busting him.
(3) She handled the bathroom pics situation unprofessionally
(to the point that many customers were concerned enogh to get the owner involved) then tried to turn it to the owner being a bitch about it when she was approached about it.
The point about people responding to this isn't necessarily just to defend one of our Favorite places, but to
hopefully make the reviewer see how unprofessional & wreckless her writing was. I've read reviews about other bars that I also strongly disagree with. But those are just opinions...
This review was more than just opinion. It was slanderous lies with an illegal action!
BTW I also think Wall Street got an Incorrect score... I love that place!
;D Just my opinion

Of course, there is one thing that does bear noticing.
The neighborhood that InCahoots is in is hardly a rough place. Its right down from the Everbank Plaza, and crawling with security from the club, Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Everbank complex. Its probably as safe as parking in front of the police building downtown. ;)
Ehh don't be so quick to judge. The bums like to hide in the shadows and mug people. They don't give two craps whether rent-a-cop is around or not. The area is pretty sparse at night and not nearly as safe as you would think.
the good thing about the area, is that most of Brooklyn was leveled, so there are fewer places for the bad peeps to hang out around there.
