Title: Boeing seeking permits for new plant in Charleston

It is looking more and more like this 2nd plant for Boeing will land in the Charleston area. Spin off jobs would also follow from supppliers, if this proceeds.

I know that Aerospace is one of the primary economic targets for the JEDC.  I wonder if Jax ( ie Cecil Field)was in the hunt for this.  Are the existing Aerospace firms in Jax of a similiar nature, or are they geared to military rather than commercial airlines?

I also wonder if Jax would be close enough to provide reasonable supplier sites.

Keep in mind that part of the dreamliner (or nightmare liner as some call it) is already being built in Charleston, so it only makes sense for the new final assembly plant to be built in that area.  Doubt if the JEDC was ever a player in that deal.  As far as supplier here in jax?  Doubtful,  dreamliner suppliers are already in the pipeline building parts, but then you never know what the future holds.

True, but North Carolina, Kansas, Texas and California, are/were in the hunt too.  Given the size of Cecil field, which massively dwarfs the North Charleston site, it would seem that numerous suppliers could also build on-site. Surely that would have some appeal.  Plus, they would not have to share the runway with a commercial airport.

I'm sure there are a number of things that went into this decision that I'm not aware of, but it seems like we should have easily gotten this over Charleston. Good points civil

It's official.

Boeing will open a second 787 assembly plant in North Charleston (the first is in Everett WA).  The state of SC will provide $170 mm in incentives and tax breaks.  Boeing currently employs 2,500 in it's current facilities in the area.  The new plant will add 900-1,300 jobs to Boeing's total workforce.

Ideally, the Boeing plant will grow much larger than that, in the same way that BWM did in the upper part of the state beginning 15 years ago.

Kansas, North Carolina, California and Texas were also in the hunt at one point, but Everett and N. Charleston were the primary finalists.

Instead of crying over Amendment 4 in the paper, Jerry Mallot should be doing more to educate us, the taxpayers, on what the Chamber is doing to lure more HQs and manufacturing to Jax. JEDC/DDA, same deal. Sure they cannot talk about negotiations, but people need jobs out there. We're at 11% unemployment and its only going to go up. The President has done NOTHING to grow new jobs, and so the states are left to do this on their own.

Transportation (naval) is in the tank, and more consolidation is needed in the industry. The Navy may send us a carrier, it would be a HUGE impact, but who knows when (there are 3 carriers on the west coast, and 1 on the east coast, according to Corrine Brown). We need to expand Cecil and the offerings. Go into debt if we have to, to bring in more jobs.

If people are working, they are not out committing crimes, we have a velocity of money in the community and money exchanges hands in the community. Without jobs, we have more crime. We need the mayor and council to do more to grow Cecil and other areas of town. We need more manufacturing in this area, and more growth of small businesses to support manufacturing. We have to grow our way out of this recession.

Next year's budget for the city will be worse than this year, they already know it. We need more growth.
