By shifting to direct federal lending, the Obama administration said it would save more than $80 billion over 10 years, which would go into higher Pell grants for low-income students, new investments in community colleges, early-childhood programs and other education efforts.
The vote was 253 to 171. The measure, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, now goes to the Senate, where Democratic leaders expect it to pass.
“This legislation provides students and families with the single largest investment in federal student aid ever,†said Representative George Miller, Democrat of California and chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, who wrote the bill. “Today, the House made a clear choice to stop funneling vital taxpayer dollars through boardrooms and start sending them directly to dorm rooms.â€

Hmmmm, John Mica, Ander Crenshaw and Cliff Stearns all voted NO. They wanted to keep corporate welfare alive and kicking. Shame on them.
Kudos to Vern Buchanon, the only Republican US Congressman from Florida who voted Yes to stopping tax-payer monies from going to corporate welfare.
Pell Grants are part of the problem regarding the high cost of college.
I'm interested in when that $4,000 for college if you volunteer 100 hours things goes through. And if there is a limit per semester....because I will volunteer 300 hours if need be...

Is that really "volunteering", or is it more along the lines of indentured servitude?
If knitting for the homeless and cuddling kittens at animal shelters is what you call indentured servitude...
