Does anybody have any thoughts on Jimmy John's. I just moved to Jacksonville from Chicago and was wondering why there are no Jimmy John's in J'Ville?
Question?
Where would you put a Jimmy Johns in J'Ville? Downtown?
Jimmy Johns is good but I am more than happy to have locally based chains Firehouse and Larry's corner the market here.
Try Angie's Subs at the beach. Very good.
Welcome to the forum tscott. I agree with copper, once you get your fill of Larry's and Firehouse, you won't miss Jimmy Johns. They had a few in Gainesville, so I too agree that they are tasty, but other than the fast service (So fast I freaked many times) they wouldn't stand out in Jax.
There is a Jimmy Johns in Tallahassee as well. Maybe here locally/regionally its more of a college market.
People from different areas have different tastes for their subs, hoagies, grinders..etc. I spend a few weeks a summer up at the Jersey shore and they have great hoagies and cheesesteaks! That being said, I actually think Publix has GREAT Subs.. the "italian" is hard to beat! Fresh rolls, good meats and all the fixin choices!
They charge you less if you don't want any veggies on your sandwich....which is great for me!
btw....there is one now open in the Tinseltown area...I think in Tapestry Park off Southside
The Jacksonville Business Journal has had a Jimmy Johnss ad in it the past couple of weeks regarding franchise opportunities so it appears they may be interested in opening in the area.
Does anyone know if there are any good traditional “delis†in Jacksonville? The ones with the guys in aprons behind the counter, big sandwiches, great potato salad?, etc. Publix and Winn Dixie do not count.

I am going to guess no.
"Johnny's" on Riverside Ave. (across from Fidelity) is a phenomenal deli. True NY style. They have both large sandwiches and great potato salad.
aw man, love me some Zabars! hit that everytime I'm in NYC. Even send gifts through their mail order service, could only dream of having a deli like that here.
I ate at Jimmy Johns when in the Twin Cities. It was good, but I still like Firehouse.
Publix is best hero in Jax. I am also used the the traditional deli from Bklyn where I grew up. They dont have them here, or if they do, I havent found one in the 8 years I have been here. In Brooklyn, you go to butcher for meat and poultry, deli for cold cuts and cold salads (potato, mac, etc..), bakery for real italian bread, and the produce to get vegs and fruit.... the supermarket is for everything else.... its nice Publix has all that stuff, but it does take away from the experience and the food a little bit....

There is a little Italian spot on Atlantic Blvd, a couple of blocks west of A1A. I don't know the name, but she has great deli meats and fresh roasted peppers and mozzarella that she makes, along with much more. Go get a sandwich there, it is closest thing to NY Italian deli here in Jax. Also she has sorbet from Italy, it is insane... Coconut inside the coconut, or lemon inside a lemon, you get the picture.... She also makes her own Italian desserts, cannolis, etc.... it is well worth the trip to the beach. It is right next to the wine store near McDonalds. Not a lot of people know about it, but everyone I have told goes back religiously.

And aren't the guys who started Larrys orignally from New York? Seems to me I remember reading that somewhere..
Angie's on Beach is also decent. Used to go there when I was at UNF.

I hope not, I think that place is terrible.... The bread they use is horrible, it is just white bread shaped like italian bread...
My old boss lived in Gainesville and swore by Jimmy Johns. I think the fact that they deliver is a huge selling point, especially to the college crowd.
Personally I enjoy a sub from Publix, or a "Pub Sub" as my friends and I call them. Angie's at the beach has good subs as well, their sub sauce is pretty tasty.
About Angie's today:

Jax City Cafe at Ocean and Forsyth has great subs.
I thought that they were opening a Jimmy Johns in Tapestry Park. What happened with that?
Jimmy Johns is awesome. The Gargantuan is probably my favorite chain sub out there. Many a drunken evenings at Florida State concluded with a 2:30 AM run to Jimmy Johns. I've always found Publix a bit too bready for my liking.

I was just in Tally this weekend and had me some Jimmy Johns, as the last time I had it was in Kentucky. I think what sets them apart (my opinion) is their bread and as some mentioned delivery service. Good stuff no doubt. Some sey there is just too much competition but Tally has just about every other option in subs that Jax does (granted the students are what make the difference).
Are there Jersey Mike's in Jacksonville?
^ Sorry, no Jersey Mike's in Jacksonville last time I checked.
I had my share of Jimmy Johns during law school, but it was never a favorite. However, compared to most JAX deli offerings, it will at least provide a reliable snadwich option.
Jacksonville is very short in the great deli department. Johnny's is ok. River City Deli downtown used to do a few hot deli standards well, but the owner from New York/New Jersey sold the place several months ago and it's been so-so since. Jax City Cafe's best offerings are their French staples like salad nicoise, bread with ham and butter, tarts, quiche, etc.
...And Larry's? Not impressed. If you explain to a customer that "mustard is yellow" when they ask for brown mustard, and you don't even know what someone is asking for when they say deli mustard, then you have no business calling your establishment a deli. I'm not even touching the poor meat quality issue.
Best deli on the First Coast is D'Aleo's on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine. (Real meat, real cheese, real Italians.) Just typing that makes me hungry for a House Special.
(I'll be checking out cdb's rec very soon. Thanks, cdb!)

While they may have Larry's and Firehouse in Tally, both were started in Jax. I'd say that ups the competition a bit. I'm so glad this thread got revived. I just saw on Sunday night that a deli will be opening in Prado Walk in Riverside. Should do some good business with the hospital across the street, assuming they have a good product.

Very true about them being from Jax. It's funny because before I even saw this thread my buddies and I were sitting in Jimmy Johns in Tally having this exact same conversation. I think one thing Jimmy's has on a few places around town is their speed. Atleast the one in Tally, there were about 3 people ahead of me and I got my sandwich in a couple minutes. I would rather see some local sandwich shops open up though, as long as they can hold their own against these chain shops, in the end they are better for our local economy.

Went for the first time to Jax City today. It was pretty good (service and food).

^ I was planning on looking for this location tomorrow. I'll be in the area and would love for this to be true.

I found nothing as well. Although I did find that there is a Jimmy Johns in Jacksonville, IL and there was a fella named Jimmy Johns in the 1989 graduating class of Mandarin High School.
Jimmy Johns is coming to Tapestry Park. It's all systems go. I don't know the date, but I can confirm its coming...
I'm very excited to hear that Jimmy John's is coming!!!!
I just moved here from Omaha, NE about 7 months ago..(my husband is stationed down here) There are at least 19 locations in the Omaha area. The JJ's market is HUGE there. I was very upset to find out that JJ's did not exist here in Jax. I had worked at JJ's for a while and I must say it was my favorite place to work. Not to mention the delicious sandies! Subs so fast you'll FREAK! Yes, Firehouse and Larry's are good. But nothing can replace the rumble in my belly for some JJ's!
We had a JJ's where I'm from but I didn't care for it - mostly because of the sprouts. I know I could get them without but once with was the turnoff. I tried it a couple more times but it's not my fave. I like Firehouse, hate Subway...I'd like to try Angie's and there is another one I can't recall the name but it's over by Aromas on Southside.

With you on the sprouts...they are too much like a dirt taste. Grit and sammich don't mix well in my book.
That is sooooo true!
JJ's is the greatest..
Drove by a month or two ago and saw there was a JJs "coming soon" to Tapestry Park.. Went back out tonight and didn't see any Jimmy Johns, was dark and I didn't remember the exact location.. Certainly isn't open yet if it still is coming to the area.. :-\

Does anybody have any thoughts on Jimmy John's. I just moved to Jacksonville from Chicago and was wondering why there are no Jimmy John's in J'Ville?
Question?

Dude i used to live across from Jimmy Johns in Chicago. miss it very much... :-\
Wish it would be downtown, but I am guessing the first will be in either Tinseltown area, SJTC area or Oakleaf. High traffic equals big dollars for the chains.
I practically moved here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin 3 months ago (practically because I lived in Georgia from May to July), and I have seriously missed me some Jimmy John's.
I've gone through withdrawals and sort-of detoxed from the addiction, but the "need" for it still lingers haha.
I spent a large portion of my 1.4k student loan on Jimmy John's, which was about 12 bucks for the sandwich, drink, chips and tip (delivery), if I remember correctly.
The best things about Jimmy John's, to me, is the bread and the Jalapeno chips.
Once you bite into the end of the sub, the crunchy end-piece, it's like the perfect ending to a movie.
The guy saves the world, gets the girl, keeps his dog and his truck, haha.
Seriously, though, if someone can confirm about this Tapestry Park JJ's, it would be great.
They wouldn't deliver to me, though, cause I'm by wilson, but I would gladly go there at least once a week for my
fix.
I might even end up going by there myself and more-likely-than-not get lost, but it would be worth it if I found that out.
PS: Sorry for my elaborations and college paper-length spiel, there.
Yes, there is one at Tapestry Park:
Jimmy Johns

Sorry! but this is not a JJ's location, trust me. Drove there as well as called. It's a resident of Jacksonville who says they get calls for Delivery all the time. They find it quite humorous and can't wait for JJ's to get here!
Had Angie's today. Phenomenal.
Red sauce was a bit vinegary for my taste, but gold was the bomb.
I let Ed know about the red, he just keeps it like that so everyone is happy haha.
I had Peruvian, girlfriend had C&H. We loved it, except for the fact that they messed up and
gave her a roast beef and other stuff sub, and she's allergic to beef.
She took a bite and had to spit it out (Ed personally apologized for it, btw)
Was all good until the way home when her throat started closing up.
Yea, bad times.
But good food!
To Jimmy John's fans feenin' for their subs, the prior posts that say it's coming to Jax are indeed accurate.
I am a resident of Tapestry Park in the Southside and while few details give signs of it's coming, I can confirm that the buildout has begun. They are to be located in the corner unit, facing DeerLake Drive Dr. W, on the residential side opposite the new III Forks Steakhouse.
Tapestry Park's actual address is 9823 Tapestry Park Cir., Jacksonville, FL 32246.
They have been slated for this spot for over a year, but it was only till recently that construction began (No confirmation on the open date yet).
BTW, love the metrojacksonville site!
FYI...
I spoke to a friend of mine at JJ Corporate who confimed that a JJ's location is underway in Tapestry Park. He also said a franchisee is looking for a location in San Marco and hopes to be open by April 2010.
Can't believe the people raving about Jimmy Johns- cold sandwiches - poor quality meats-(i'm in the industry)
If you want a great sandwich, nothin' better than a blueboy IMO:
http://www.blueboysandwiches.com/
I hit up Jimmy John's in San Marco some, mostly because I'm an avocado fiend. But, truly as far as sub-type sandwiches go, Jax City Cafe has been my favourite - especially the one with shrimp. Delicious and light. And, they do make the best hot chocolate in town.
I'm stoked to see a sandwich delivery service in town but it does seem to me that most of JJ's options taste almost exactly the same... and seems the bread overwhelms the whole thing. Still reasonable though. Doesn't keep me from eating there.
For awesome amazing sandwiches though, I'm all over Olio. ArtWalk routine used to be Burrito Gallery but has switched to Olio. Traditional yet creative offerings at the same time.
