QuoteWell, in a result that he will probably accept as downright apocalyptic for America, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart has been selected, in an online poll conducted by Time Magazine, as America's Most Trusted Newscaster, post-Cronkite. Matched up against Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson, Stewart prevailed with 44 percent of the vote. Now, if we're being honest, he probably managed to prevail as the winner precisely because he was the odd man out in a field of network news anchors. Nevertheless, I think Jim Cramer should feel free to SNACK ON THAT.
Brian Williams drew the second largest percentage of votes, with 29 percent. Gibson and Couric finished third and fourth, respectively, with 19 and 7 percent of the vote.
Time has helpfully broken out the results, state-by-state, so if you want to muse on some anomalous results, feel free. Brian Williams won Arizona, Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, Florida, South Carolina, Indiana, Delaware and Vermont, and tied in Kentucky and Alaska. Charlie Gibson was big in Tennessee and Montana. Katie Couric pulled off the Mondalian feat of winning one state: Iowa.
Stewart finished no lower than second place in all states, except, curiously, Vermont.

he's the best at what he does, no doubt.
Jon. ;)
I confess, I'm not familiar with Jon Stewart. i guess I don't watch enough TV. I would have picked Charlie Gibson.
He's really in a different class of journalism. I love the daily show, but he does make fun of the news more than report it.
Without the "real" news he wouldn't have as much appeal.
Jon Stewart is my favorite journalist but I can't decide whether the Onion or Weekly World News is my favorite newspaper. ;)
He's an ok newscaster to me, but I am kinda curious why his headline on "America's Most Trusted Newscaster" keeps going around.
Time Online polls is very unreliable and can be manipulated very easily. For example, the Time Online person of the year was the owner of that group that hacked Sara Palin's email account. I suspect that had something to do with a their group voting over and over again.
He isnt a newscaster... he is a comedian. While I enjoy the show it is most certainly not serious news. He goes in the same category as SNL's Weekend Update.

I agree. That was the point of my previous post.
stephendare wrote "In the course of his shows, you usually get more actual discussion about the ideas behind the news than anywhere else on television."
That's true if by "anywhere else on television" you mean all the short attention span shows that get the highest ratings and never spend more than 3 minutes on a particular story unless it's to repeat what they said 3 minutes ago. On CSPAN or PBS you can get 10 minutes or longer and more than just 2 sides to an issue.
He is talented and I enjoy the show... but he is not a journalist. It is a comedic talk show full of hilarious opinions.
I can see the John Stewart eulogies and national mourning when he passes rivaling Cronkite... :D
I can't stand him really. I think it's sad that so many get their news from him. I think he tries too hard to fight "for the people" (see the chrysler "be a person" bit he did, and the Cramer interviews)
Old world court jesters were a very real part of the advisory to monarchies from Europe to the Far East. Comedy, as a way to relay controversial information, is a method that can often be used without causing offence - and in the old days - without the loss of your head.
According the the Pew Research Foundation, John Stewart and Colbert Report viewers are among the nation's most educated subjects on current affairs.

Did anybody watch the Daily Show when Craig Kilborn was the host?
He is a comedian and not a newscaster which makes this poll all the more sad. I've been a fan of Jon since his early days. I liked his MTV show and even remember seeing him do stand-up on TV. I loved the Daily Show with Craig Kilborn and was skeptical it would be as good without him, even though I loved Jon's humor. He made it his own and it's just as good if not better. I still miss the 5 questions though.
I loved Kilborn and thought when Kilborn was there it was terrific. Stewart does a good job but I just liked Kilborn better. And ''Back in Black'' was fantastic.
I didn't watch the show. Is there anyway to pull it up on the Internet?
