Thorne Smith: Satire and the Supernatural from the 20s
(http://photos.metrojacksonville.com/photos/594589953_rhBHo-O.jpg)
Thorne Smith was one of America's best loved novelists and writer of satire.
He wrote towards the end of Prohibition until the opening years of the Great Depression and left behind one of the most delightful mirrors of contemporary American Life of the era.
Thorne was a junior member of the Algonquin Circle and a friend (maybe lover) of Dorothy Parker, but his books were considered outright scandalous despite their hilarity and popularity.
Because of the outrageous nature of his stories, Thorne managed the distinction of being a best selling author that no one would admit to reading.
Metrojacksonville explores the legacy of Thorne Smith.

Topper was indeed one of my favorite TV shows back in the day! Excellent stuff too.
OCKLAWAHA
Topper was one of my favorites, too http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045447/fullcredits#cast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045447/fullcredits#cast). I really liked Anne Jeffreys, Robert Sterling, and Leo G. Carroll.
Though The Glorious Pool is surely my favorite, The Stray Lamb easily offers the best commentary on the Volstead Act, between Melville Long's car under fire from the police, and Mr. Lamb's adventures while enduring "the most woe-begone, flop-eared, putty-footed, miscellaneous assortment of canine maladjustments". One episode in particular while Lamb is a dog illustrates, to my way of thinking, the most tragic of outcomes for those who did not enjoy the money and breeding of Lamb, and does so with a pathos I have frankly never seen elsewhere in literature.
Thorne looks like Stephen Dare with a regular haircut and less 50 #. Self Promotion of another life, Stephen? Interesting case for copyright law. There is widespread speculation as to how you are supporting yourself, or plan to! I think the City Council Chambers would make a fine habitat for you. Great lifelong benefits too!
This is a great article! I'm going to link it to my blog later when I get home.
Just wanted to commend Stephen Dare for his terrific article on my favorite writer, Thorne Smith.
Love the Night Life of the Gods posters you included in the article!

Hi Stephen,
Great to hear from you!
Anthony Slide actually wrote what is technically the 1st book on Thorne Smith,
after I reluctantly turned down the contract offered by BearManor Press.
It came out in April of 2010 I believe.
The book is good but doesn't offer much more than what I had produced for
my 10,000 word bio for Scarlet Street in 2000. But most importantly, I commend Ben Ohmart and
Anthony Slide for getting the book out there!
I'm still working on a full length bio and have much more info I've gathered.
Will be adding more to the website soon.
Speaking of which, I should ask your publisher about what might be done to get permission
to reprint this great article of yours on the Thorne Smith website!
Will definitely have to check out the Facebook page now!
Many thanks~

Is he any relation to Courtney Thorne-Smith, a regular on Two and a Half Men, According to Jim, and so on?
Hi Dashing Dan,
That's a great question and one I originally had but, unfortunately, no, Thorne Smith and Courtney Thorne-Smith are not related to each other whatsoever.
