Ok, I am not sure if this is the most appropriate place to post this. I need some advice on my options. I currently work at a hotel in Atlantic Beach. I work in the engineering department. I have been there now for a little over 9 months. In February I had my license was suspended for 5 years. I am eligible for a hardship after a year. I have been having problems with my boss working with me. I take the bus to work. I usually get Sundays and Mondays off due to the fact that the Sunday schedule for the buses makes it hard for me to work a full shift. He, my boss, is now telling me that I have to make a decision on what I want to do with my job. He tells me that I am causing problems within the department and that I need to make some changes on my end so that I can accommodate him. Can he fire me on the basis that I have transportation issues even though I can work any other day. Another problem is that I have as I said Sundays and Mondays off but he wants me to split my days off. (i.e.,Sundays and Wednesdays off.) But everyone else gets their two days off back to back. In my opinion its not fair that I have to take split days off plus because my income is not sufficient I have to pick up side jobs which usually needs me to have two consecutive days off. I could use some advice and suggestions.
Well... my advice is to do whatever it takes to keep your job in today's economy.
I'd ask Eddie or Chuck during your free consultation.
FL is an "at will" and "right to work" state. That basically means that your employer can fire you for any reason that they feel is legitimate.
I'm sorry but I'd try to do what you could to try and stay on and maybe look for something else that might work better for you.
Ride a bike to work. Pay a co-worker on the same schedule as yours to give you a ride. Move to within walking/biking distance of your job.
Quit drinking!
I'd suggest you do what you must until you can find another job that would be better for your current situation, while keeping the job you have. It will suck for a while, but jobs aren't as easy to come for right now.. so look for one that is better for your schedule and location. You might need to move away from the beaches in order to do that, but do your best to keep your boss happy for the time being.
The above posters comment "Quit drinking!" is inappropriate - instead, perhaps consider the reasons behind why you have gotten to where you are in your life right now, and adapt and plan accordingly.
One place which might be good to check is the Department of Labor. Try http://www.dol.gov/dol/rights-benefits.htm (http://www.dol.gov/dol/rights-benefits.htm). They may not be able to help, but they might be able to make some suggestions. Florida may also have offices which can help and Work Source might be able to help you find a new job. Irish Blessings upon you and yours.
