So you know those giant green trash cans the city provided a few years ago....I'm trying to find a replacement. I called the city, but they placed me on hold 4 times. Anybody? :-\
I think they stopped that program a few years ago. If they haven't I need to get in line since somebody stole mine two months ago right out of my yard

Yes they stopped the free trash cans. I had a can that had the city seal on the side that was in my house when i purchased it. The city took it and told me that they no longer give free trash cans and i would have to buy my own.

Wow... by discontinuing this program it virtually ensures that some people will have to go without trash cans. If the city cannot even provide free trashcans to its citizens I fear for us all. All citizens should have equal access to trash cans...
Sadly, only Springfield was able to participate in that program. On the brightside, you can get a new recycle bucket (blue), at no charge.
These trash cans were intended to be used with automated trucks in order to save money on manpower. I guess they didn't work out as well as they had hoped.
Automated trash collection works really well. Where I used to live you had a black container for trash and a green one for recycling. They would only pick up the trash in your barrel which really helped limit what you threw out. Trash pick-up was every week and recycling every other. If you had bigger items to pick up like furniture you had to call and pay for a special pick up. I hate driving down Jacksonville streets and seeing trash piled on the curb and blowing in the street. It's disgusting!
I'm guessing automated trash was something the city once again never correctly implemented. What is with this city and not doing things right the first time ::)

Yes, automated trash and recycling pick-up is seemingly something every other major city can implement and Jacksonville cannot...
Pretty soon, Jacksonville will be used like the cavemen on GEICO ads -- "So simple, even Jacksonville can do it."

It took about two months to get a recycling bin when I bought my house. I think I am on my third or fourth one. It's amazing how many people steal bins.

You could spray paint it yellow, to make it easier to spot while driving around Jacksonville....

I agree. In addition, there seems to be more trash on the street after trash collection than before. They should totally move to an automated system. In the long run, a privately run automated trash collection system will save the city lot of money. I think I once heard they didn't implement an automated program because it would put the trash collectors out of work. Don't know if there was a union involved or not; just what I heard.
I bought my own can when I moved in. Not sure if the city was still giving out cans. Everyone else I knew had bought their own can. I don't see the big deal in that. They're pretty cheap. If you can't afford a trash can then you've got much bigger problems.
