My friend on Ernest street near Margaret just got broken into AGAIN this morning. He was only gone for 30 minutes. They obviously watched him leave, then kicked in his front door. Everyone needs to keep an eye out. I cant believe people are kicking in front doors and leaving with TVs and no one sees this happen.
If this has happened more than once, maybe your friend needs to think about a security system rather than replacing his TV's.
Um, he does have a security system. Do you think cops actually come? The first time they ripped the security system out of the closet. This time they just kicked in the door got what they wanted and left while the alarm is going off. Any more wise ideas?
Seriously??? He has a monitored security system...not an alarm, a security system?? Wow, if the trigger-happy cops (how many cops are there now, like 5? lol) don't respond to break-ins anymore, than no, I don't have anymore wise ideas. Oh, wait, yes I do! I have a vacant house down there that I can't sell. Your friend could move some stuff into my place to entice the thiefs and we could further entice them to destroy any evidence they may leave behind by leaving out some strategically placed lighter fluid and matches :-). Hmm, now that I think of it, that only solves MY problem, not your friend's, lol.
Yeah its a monitored security system. Last time his house got broken into, the alarm company called the cops, and he called the cops. It took them 2.5 hrs to respond.
and that, friends, is why a security system is essentially worthless.
They pretty much are. I worked at ADT years ago monitoring alarms and the Duval county sherffif's office would fine people after a certain number of false alarms. Plus my bro's a cop and suggest that the level of priority they put on responding to alarms is like ....-5. I always had to haggle with the dispatchers to even take the alarm calls. Sometimes if they were too busy they'd flat out tell me "sorry, we're not responding to alarm calls right now"
So with all the other action going on in killville, they just don't have time to rush to house alarms in the higher crime areas.
I had thought that part of Riverside had been improving in terms of crimes against property, but i've heard of way too many incidents in the past year.
Suggestion: don't own anything nice! Seems to work ok for me, my t.v.'s 200 years old!
Sadly it's a fact that riverside police don't respond nearly as fast as they should. They've become pretty complacent to the fact that there are so many break-ins.
Living on a busy main road has helped that somewhat. I was usually able to flag a cop down within 10 minutes vs. calling which would get us one "within an hour". Getting them to run prints on the car breakins was next to impossible.
Oh I hate Safe Toooouchh!
Not trying to take this thread too off track... but here are just some random questions (and I am not trying to convey any sort of opinion)
What percentage of "alarm calls" are a) false alarms b) a physical crime against a person or a pet?
If they are typically smash & grabs... does it make sense for the police to promptly respond to these? I only say this, because as much as it sucks to have stuff taken, insurance claims can cover "stuff". If they have clear data that shows certain trends, and police resources are limited, shouldn't they spend their time responding to calls where people's safety is in jeopardy?
That being said, they could be sitting on their lazy butts for all I know...
In an ideal world, the dispatchers could QUICKLY determine false alarms / calls vs. real threats and we would have the man power to respond to all of them quickly. Of course that isn't the case.
Are there cops in riverside whose sole purpose it is to patrol the area? Bicycle cops? Is there a desire or way to petition for that?
As an added sidebar... I have called 911 a few times and they waste A LOT of time. I have quickly stated all pertinent info in a sentence or less and they have me on the phone for 5 valuable minutes about nonsense and repeating myself... those minutes aren't valuable to me, but they are to the person whose life I was trying to save.
He needs to get a dog!
haha good call! And a German Shepherd ;)
They are typically guard dogs by nature.. although they can be very sweet. I had one growing up...
Thats what I have. I leave my dog inside. I have had two burglurys stopped because of them. Once was a brazen attempt, someone used a ladder to kick in one of my windows, and was quickly chased back by my dog. The second time someone found my tiny downstairs bathroom window unlocked, climbed in, and quickly locked themselves in my bathroom.
My one suggestion, if you get a dog, get one that is an actual watch dog. My indoor dog is loving, and great with the kids, but Im pretty sure he would kill someone breaking into his house.
the other thing would be bars and and iron gate. my neighborhood has 3 different retired couples constantly outside but i tell you even then we've had a few but usually back door crashers.
I have a pair of Dobermans and I let them out in the fenced in front yard every day just to let the..uh...less than desirable neighbors know they are there. Otherwise they stay in the house during the day, with the ability to get into the backyard, also fenced. Best alarm system on the planet..
Appears this might be someone who knows him; who he is, when he comes and goes, what he has in the house...seems like they know exactly where to go in the house and what's in it. Might want to take a look at some of his buddies, friends, etc. I'll bet that's who is doing this.

You're absolutely right "jbroad," ravenous, crazed dogs, hounds, and pooches are the best alarm system and thief and "bad guy" neutralizers in the world.

But make sure they're well hidden so if thieves break in while you're away they don't leave with your loaded weapon.
And remember, if you catch someone in your house. Kill them before they get out! ;D
QuoteHe needs to get a dog!
We have 10 properties in Riverside and Murray Hill. The people who have dogs, nothing ever happens to them. Those without, have issues. Alarm systems are OK, but you really need a system that is mounted in a closet that is LOUD and I mean LOUD enough to hear 10 blocks away, piercing almost. Those seem to get people out, because you can't carry something when you are covering your ears.
Tell your friend to get a 170 dollar STEEL DOOR with the plastic door frame. No one will ever be able to kick in that door again. My contractor installs them for HUD, no angry husband has been able to kick down a HUD door he has installed yet.
Where is the house for sale in Riverside?
My vote is for a dog. I've got two, one dog is a Chihuahua and the other is a Rot. Once, prior to getting married, my husband was watching them while I was OOT. On afternoon while he was at work his neighbor was robbed. That same robber had tried his house but stopped when he heard my dogs barking(Normally the chihuahua will bark at any noise and the Rot will follow suit)
Yea...some parts of riverside aren't safe areas. Mainly because the majority of people living in riverside, are renters... so its hard to keep track of neighbors. Maybe you should just move. :-\

LOL...can't argue with that, and the thief won't either, that is, if you are at home and catch him or her in the act.

Ive had my house in Riverside for 8 years, you couldnt pay me to move out of my house. I dont think the "renters" are the ones breaking in. Riverside might be somewhat transient, but I dont think there is a problem with there being a lot of apartments around. My house is surrounded by apartments and I like it actually.
I've got to agree with Compound here. I've been renting for 4 years now and share his view that it's not the renters that are the problem. Sure, there are a few bad apples. I've spoken with many police officers in the area, and without singling out any specific demographic, most of the problems come from the transients, crackheads, and people from the other side of 17 looking for easy pickings.
I can't tell you the amount of times I've had my car broken into for pens. PENS so that they can go do junk in willowbranch park (Which, btw, is the nastiest park in the area. I rarely take my kids there without seeing baggies, home made pipes, etc. on the ground. Eww.)
It's just one of the facts of living in an urban neighborhood. Springfield may be no better, you've got less than reputable people and such less than 10 blocks away, we've got less than reputable and such less than 10 blocks away.
Ah yes, the blame the renters card.
I had a friend who blamed a shooting near my apartment in San Marco on the fact that there's a lot renters in our area. Later I found out the shooting was over drugs & the gunman and victim were both from NW Jax.
It just has a lot to do with all the nearby elements and demographics of the hood. Jax Beach for example has a ton of renters but they don't have as much violent/property crime out there. Not as much as the in-town neighborhoods at least.
A dog will always be your best bet. I have an american bull and he is great with the kids. I locked my keys in my house and had to get a nieghbor to break in, I thought my dog was going to take the guys head off. I had never seen him so angry, thats when I knew I didn't need to listen to Lester Jacksons stupid Safetouch commercials!

The lack of crime in Jax Beach is on account of the majority of the population being pot-heads. It's hard to motivate a pot-head to do much of anything, especially concoct a plan to break-in to someone's house. Half-way through the thought, they've forgotten what they were thinking about to begin with. What was I saying??? ;-)

Hollywood Ave....technically in Avondale. It's the little blue bungalow at the very end of the street next to Roosevelt.
Very funny, Pancake. Ahh, the good ole days when drooling on your navel was so relaxing.
I keep thinking about how exciting it would be to come home, open the steel door on the plastic door frame, fend off the chihuahua and the killer dobermans who greet you by dragging in the mutilated robber, and try to remember where you hid the gun to shoot the dude.

hehe "dude, why am I in someone's house?"
They'll still take your beach cruiser and porch grill though. I lost a few of those out there (but it was my fault since I chose to live right behind freaking Joe's Crab Shack)
Don't at the apartments there, ever.
You won't have any break-ins. But you will have cokehead neighbors banging on your door at 3 am and ask you why your wi-fi isn't working and you will have windows fall out of the seal and onto your head while sleeping.
Good times!
Compound, was the house's interior easily viewable from the exterior? Were the blinds or curtains open? Are are the windows as bare as Deception at Metro on a Saturday night?
I don't know what the statistics are for lower Ernest, but to have a property broken into multiple times seems more than random. My block on Ernest has not experienced crime in the past year, but pretty much everyone on my block knows each other. Plus, with different work schedules, someone usually has an eye on the houses and apartments.
With the makeshift substation at Gate on Stockton, we need to capitalize on the JSO presence. I know there are several task forces monitoring activity, but we need to work more closely with JSO. In the meantime, we need to ensure we don't leave our houses easy targets.
No its not easily viewable, but everyone keep an eye out. State farm just told him there is said to be a white pickup truck that goes around the area between about 8-5 on weekdays, and they knock on the door, if no one answers, they go in.
This morning I followed a white caprice that went down gilmore, then down ernest, dellwood, then myra and stopped. I think he realized i was following him and he took off. Definately up to no good going up and down every street in a 4-5 block area.
If I feel threatened and one of them breaks in my door, I am putting two rounds of rock salt in them, won't kill them, but it will hurt like hell and the won't soon return.
mtrain, rock salt? really? they'll be back and they'll spray your home with a shotty or chopper. If you feel threatened and you've got heat use it so they won't ever have the chance to come back. Shooting these guys with rock salt is like grabbing a snake by its tail. My preference for home protection is a Saiga short barrel with a 20 round drum filled with 00 buckshot, come get some!

I agree. If you're going to carry it better be lethal. As much as I dislike the thought of taking someone's life, it's my right to protect my property and belongings.

How would I do that? Buy the casing and then put powder and the rock salt in? What do you cap it with?
Sounds like not a bad idea. It'd feel as bad as getting shot, but it won't be fatal and will dissolve instead of requiring removal.
At "in-house" distances rock salt would only make half as big a hole in someone as lead shot, but the final result would be the same. If you don't want to kill someone who invades your house (oh, foolish one) then get a taser.
There was a famous movie actor who killed himself by accident just a couple of years ago when showing off to some girls by firing a blank at his head. The wax used to keep the powder falling out of the cartridge case penetrated his skull and killed him.
Firearms are designed to kill and cannot be made non-lethal.

Then I won't bother modifying the shells. Taser's too much hassle at 2 in the morning if someone kicks in your door, and if it's a wired hopped-up crackhead then it very well may have little or no effect. I've seen too many videos of cops tasering guys wired out on meth etc. like 10 times and they keep right on running/fighting/whatever. Much better to stick with your gun. Get a laser sight, and you don't even have to worry about messing up your own walls by accident. ;)
Anyone catch the 5-0 show last night? Around 10:45 the police helicopter began circling the block (Riverside Ave / Memorial Park). I walked down Margaret to the Riverside Ave where there were cops everywhere to see what was going on. I talked to one officer and he said it was 2 teens that broke into the big apartment complex and were stealing a couple bicycles. Apparently 1 teen got away. I was shocked they had 15 officers, closed intersections and at least 45 minutes of the chopper over head for 1 kid who stole a bike
The officer I spoke said they were really trying to step up their game in the neighborhood so I guess I shouldn't complain... wonder if they caught the kid?
That's great that they are stepping they're game up, but that doesn't look good when the city is talking budget cuts.
Dogs are good, as are dog bowls outside.
Also, I think our chickens freak people out a little and keep them out of the house (though that doesn't keep them from stealing my lawnmower from the carport -- my fault for not putting it in the garage).
Also, shooting is double-plus good.
