A great start to Jax history with maps, photos, directories, postcards, histories, etc. can be found at:
http://jpl.coj.net/coll/florida/
Especially fascinating are the imaged city directories starting with 1876! See: http://jpl.coj.net/coll/florida/cdindex.html
Also, a few neat photos from 1880 or so to 1895 of North Florida sites: http://jpl.coj.net/coll/florida/photographs.html
Prepare to spend hours wading through these treasure troves of history. Looks like more can be picked up with a personal visit to the Downtown Library.
wow. thanks.
Many more can be explored in the FLORIDA room on the 3rd floor of the Main Library. Sadly nothing in the Florida room can be taken out of that room.
Special Collections including Florida is on the 4th floor along with the Ansbacher Map Collection! If you live in Duval County and have never been to the Main Library, you need to take a look! You won't be disappointed!
Most of the historical information you'll find on this site comes from documents stored in the Special Collections department. The 4th floor of the library contains information on just about anything you want to know about Jacksonville.
I can't figure out how to search the Florida Collection's catalogue.
May I look at theis title?
L'Engle, S[usan]., 1888. Notes of my family and recollections of my early life. Knickerbocker Press, New York. 67 pp. [Fatio family; 18 cm; illustrated]
in the main library?
