Title: Schlitz anyone?
Post by: Julian on June 15, 2009, 01:00:38 PM
Has anyone seen around town the "new" Schlitz that's sold in bottles? I heard they changed their formula back to the original one when they were popular in the 60's and I'd like to try it out, i've been to quite a few places around town and haven't seen it, in fact the only place I was able to find the old schlitz in cans was at the Winn-Dixie downtown, if anyone's seen it let me know! thanks!

If Pabst (PBR) can do it so can Schlitz... I want some too!

interestingly enough, schlitz is owned by Pabst now, i've tried the current beer, and to me it's better than PBR, still not anywhere near a quality beer, but better than PBR, so i'm curious to see how the "new" original formula is

I believe it's the same formula that's been sold in the cans but now in the original brown bottle.

I've always liked Schlitz....

Malt Liquor (blue bull)
Malt Liquor (red bull)
Malt Liquor (black bull)
Bull Max
Bull Ice
High Gravity VSL

Schlitz until last year was only available in the Midwest. Great to hear it is finally available here.

First PBR, now Schlitz? What's next, Blatz, or maybe Lowenbrau?  Yikes!

Who cares, draft beer is draft beer, you get it cold enough, it all tastes the same.

Maybe if the car companies had focused on innovation instead of re-creation, they could have survived, but I doubt anyone will go under with some wasted barley and hops...

so i've found that Winn-Dixie carries not the new "old" schlitz but the  regular one in the can for $6.99 for a 12 pack, and honestly, it's not that bad. Hopefully they'll roll out the new "old" formula here soon

When I saw PBR in bottles at Publix I let our a little laugh...and then I bought a 6 pack.  If I see Schlitz or Lowenbrau...I am all over that.  It would be so nice to order a Lowenbrau at a bar as people are order orange flavored Michelob and drinks with fruit in them.

Total wine has Lowenbrau as well as Schlitz in a can

Don't knock PBR. It may taste horrible. But it's consistently horrible (it tastes the same warm as it does cold) and cheap. 7 bucks for a 12 pack at publix? Can't beat that.

Interested to try the schlitz. Hope it doesn't give me the schitz like pbr though.

i really dont like PBR at all, but actually have no problem kicking back quite a few schlitz in a row. I have had the Schlitz yet, so no bad side effects, minus the headaches and nightmares, but it's worth it!

I've got nothing against PBR (I drink it semi-regularly), but my cheap beer of choice is High Life Light.  It's around $7 for a 12-pack of bottles and tastes quite decent.  For a light beer, the alcohol content isn't all that pitiful either.  I understand your skepticism, but give it a try!

Now with that said, I love "real" beer too...Dogfish Head 60min IPA, Newcastle Brown Ale, Sweetwater 420, Rogue Deadguy Ale, Terrapin Rye, Left Hand Milk Stout, and of course Bold City 1901 Red Ale!

I'll have to give the high life a try, I love "real" beer as well, Newcastle is my main one, but at $15 for a 12 pack, it's not always the most cost effective choice, Harpoon UFO is also one of my favorites, as well as anything from the Magic Hat brewing co. up in VT. Downtown Brown from California is also another great choice. Also I noticed at Total wine they have a selection of brews from Highland Brewing compnay in Asheville, excellent beers

The new(old) Schlitz in pretty darn good for being $6.99 @ Winn Dixie.  It's a clean tasting nice little lawnmower style beer....I like PBR but I think Schlitz may have just won me over

was it the one in the can or bottle? the can one is the one they've been selling for the past 30something years or so, the bottle is the "original" forumula from when they were popular. I haven't the bottle yet, still searching, but the can is pretty damn good for the price, i saw at food lion it's now $5.99 for the 12 pack, let's start a Schlitz revolution!

If ever in Atlanta, here's a shout out for the Porter Beer Bar in the Little Five Points area.
This is an incredible gastropub, in terms of unbelievable beers available and food.

It's supposed to hit 97 here today, I'm gonna steam some shrimp inside.

When in Jax recently for a short trip, I dropped in to Dick's Wings in Lakewood,
because they were supposed to serve Bold City. They don't offer it anymore, apparently.

Man, I'd love to try some jax beer.

As for the PBR in a bottle, they've been doing that for years. One of the cool things about PBR in a bottle is that under the bottle cap they have "cards" (5 of diamonds, Queen of spades, etc etc). So you must drink them in at least quantities of 5:)

Not my beer of choice, however...

Well Folks, it was over 2 years ago I posted about this beer and the day has finally come for those of you who care. I was able finally get a 12 pack of the original Schlitz formula in bottles at the publix on Roosevelt. Today is a great day. Oh and it is actually pretty decent.

This is true, though sometimes life is too expensive not to. That and the nostalgic factor, like rediscovering  lost knowledge or finding a way jump the gap between mine and a prior generation is fun and satisfying. Might be just me though, everyone is different.

Uh? Yeah, but only if they agree to moving the entire brewery to Jacksonville...

Who said 'LAWNMOWER BEER?' I'd tend to call it more like a 'TREE FROG BEER.'

My friend lives in the "2nd" Schlitz mansion right on the lake in Milwaukee, and his friend and neighbor (well a few blocks away) is Joe Pabst.  I was just there and all we drank was Schlitz.

No, life is too short to drink tasteless beer. The "Shop & Save" in Springfield (3rd st and Market) recently had a 12 pack selection for $9.99 from a Wisconsin brewery that was really good. It even came in a wooden holder like a tool box! So sometimes you can find good beer for cheap!

The market at the corner of Oak and Stockton Streets has these too.  Interesting packaging.
