Title: Renting from Downtown to the Southside
Post by: 9a is my backyard on June 02, 2009, 01:03:19 AM
I recently graduated from UNF and I'll be working on the Southside starting later this month.  I'm trying to find a place somewhere between Southside and downtown, preferably closer to downtown.  Since it's just me, ideally I'd like a small house with a yard to do some gardening and a small garage or storage space to put my bikes.  I looked around the San Marco/St. Nick area but couldn't really find anything that excited me.  I'd like to bike to work so I was trying to avoid going north of the river to keep the commute a little shorter, but I may have to open my options up to the northbank and beyond.

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.  Thanks!!!

I would suggest Springfield, Riverside, Avondale, or San Marco. Your commute will be longer but after work and on the weekends you're closer to things happening Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Where exactly on the Southside will you be working and what price range are you looking for?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll be working at the end of Deerwood Park opposite the Town Center.  I'm trying to stay under $1200/month if I can.  I'm debating buying a place in 6 months to a year, so I'm considering renting a small/cheap place and saving up to make a downpayment.

Take it from someone who bikes to work, I would stay close as possible to where I work. The suburbs are very unfriendly to bikers. I at least travel downtown so the environs are a little better geared towards biking. When you buy, you can select a place closer to Downtown if you want to be near the downtown. You should have no problem finding a one bedroom for under 1200 around that area of town.

The Mirmar neighborhood is an older community that has held up very nicely, thats just south of San Marco. Empire Point is really nice, and sorta tucked away. There are several such communities just east, and south of San Marco that are worth looking into.

Also, the old Oklahoma community, just north of San Marco Sq.  Basically in behind the Jack Rabbits area. Its not quite as lavish as some of the houses just off the sq, and should be more affordable.

This is something I was afraid of.  I've biked through the burbs to downtown before, but never under the pressure of having to get to work on time and certainly not everyday.  I know it's possible, but I think it would get old over time.  I was trying to position myself so I could bike or take the bus in case it was raining or I just didn't feel like getting hit by a car that day.

I've been looking in most of these neighborhoods, but I'll definitely go back through and check out Mirmar and Oklahoma.  There are a lot of nice, small homes there, unfortunately I haven't found any of the 'nice' ones for rent :)

Thanks again for the suggestions!
