Title: What to do on Sundays?
Post by: toneloc007 on May 23, 2009, 12:03:21 PM
I'm looking for suggestions for things to do on Sundays here in Jax.  Anyone have any?  I'm pretty much just starting to "explore" Jacksonville.  Your input would be great.

Go to church, fish, hunt, go to church, bar hop at the beach, visit the Cummer art museum in Riverside or MOCA downtown, go to church, walk, skate or bike the Northbank Riverwalk or the Baldwin rails to trails or the Timucuan Preserve, go to mass, shop at St Johns Town Center or the Avenues mall or the flea market and then go back to church.

The State, City and National Parks from Fernandina Beach, South along A-1-A to Marineland are FANTASTIC, hiking shorts, bug spray and swimming gear, a good camera, and a picnic basket of goodies and your ready for a trip back in time. WAAAAAY BACK!

Zoo, Riverwalk, Beach, if you have a boat an evening cruise downtown, Jaguars in the fall, I don't have a favorite Sunday night bar or club.

Hope you like the outdoors because much of the best of Jax is outside.

As mentioned, our city, state, and national parks in the area are great options.  Consider bringing a kayak, canoe, fishing pole, and/or camera to experience nature at its best.  Eagles, ospreys, hawks, and other varieties of birds passing through that supposedly provide the area with one of the most diverse range of bird species in North America over the course of four seasons.  Add a similar diversity of fresh and saltwater fish, gators, manatees, otters, and lots of four legged land animals and you will find each trip an adventure.  Hope you like reptiles and insects too! :)  Gems include Guana Park, Huguenot Park, Timucuan Preserve, Ft. Caroline, Ft. Clinch.

For day trips, go to St. Augustine and Amelia Island/Fernandina taking A1A and the Mayport Ferry.  For a long weekend, go to the Golden Isles, Savannah, or Charleston/Beaufort.

Rent a boat and ply the waterways - river, tributaries, estuaries, inland coast, ocean - we have it all.  Or take a charter boat.  Don't forget our legions of golf courses.

Try the museums, zoo, symphony, special events such as the air shows or countless area festivals.  And RAM and the Beaver Street Farmers Market nearby.

If you plan to buy a house or find a permanent residence otherwise, take time to travel the many areas of town.  It could easily take you many weekends to cover the area.  Explore San Marco, Riverside/Avondale/Ortega, San Jose, Mandarin, the Beaches, Arlington, Westside, Orange Park, JTB, Northside, etc. to get the feel for Jax.  You will find everything from the Old South to Resort Aura to Middle America Suburban to Not Quite New York Urban to Trailer Home Heaven to Rural/Farms, etc.  Something for everyone.  If you are intrigued by the rich and famous, stick to houses on the waterfront, particularly the St. Johns River or ocean.

Depending on where you live and what you're into... if you're new to town the starbucks in 5points is a good sunday spot for meeting people. Memorial park, bike riding, library, museums, riverfront, & the beach. As far as cool places go drink Eclipse, Kickbacks & Shanty town are pretty chill.
