Title: New music/music you should hear thread
Post by: duvalbill on May 01, 2009, 10:59:44 AM
Allright gentlemen and ladies, I'm looking for some new tunes that a worth a listen.  I'll listen to almost anything besides ambient and electronic, so any ideas would be welcomed.

Here are some lesser known bands that you guys should definitely give a listen to: Blitzen Trapper (their newest album, Furr, is simply amazing), Ryan Bingham (alt-country is alive), Dr. Dog (check out their album, Fate), The Felice Brothers (fans of Dylan shouldn't be dissapointed with these guys), Floating Action (great lo-fi), Bedouin Soundclash (check out Sounding a Mosaic, the lead singer sounds a little Paul Simon-ish), SOJA (best new reggae band I've heard in a while), Drive-by Truckers (just a great rock band), Cunninlynguists (quite simply the best hip-hop act around), Common Market (check out Tobacco Road).  Last, I'll plug my cousin, Christina Wagner.  If you haven't had an opportunity to check out one of her live shows, do yourself a favor.

Some of my current favorites...

Averkiou (excellent shoegaze from Gainesville)
Able Baker Fox (my favorite new "rock" band of 2008...their debut album is nearly flawless)
Propagandhi (these Canadian political/activist punks have been around a while, but the new album is incredible)
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (Austin band that's been around but has a stellar new album)
Broken Social Scene (Canadian indie supergroup of sorts...if you're not familiar yet, you're missing out)
Carrigan (shares members with The Cancer Conspiracy, except it's not all instrumental, very spacey, atmospheric and dare I say...sexy rock).

Don’t know if you’re already familiar with these semi popular groups but if not definitely look em up. Based on who you mentioned you’ll probably like them.

Fleet Foxes â€" Relatively new band with a folk/bluegrassish sound.

Just to make things easier…

Animal Collective â€" Uuuuuh, Experimental Pop Rock? (I hate subgenre labels like this) Imagine Pink Floyd remixing Beach Boy songs. Anyway check out their new album Merriweather Post Pavilion. Catchy, trippy, awesome.

The Hold Steady â€" Lots of Springsteen comparisons and it’s not hard to see why. Some of their songs sound so much like him it’s scary. But they’re not just some rip off of The Boss. These guys have their own style and write damn good songs.

The kids love the Ting Tings, very catchy, dance pop. May be too cutesy for some though.

A.C. Newman does a really chill cover of a-ha's take on me. I know what you're thinking, Another take on me cover right? But this one's good.

Atmosphere is one hip-hop artist i've been burning up my iphone with lately. I've been listening to him since 2003 though, he's like "alternative hiphop" i guess you'd say.

Silversun Pickup's new album is pretty good, as Mr. Tree suggested to me sometime back. I love the early 90's smashing pumpkin sound they have going on.

Everyone seems to be going crazy over Kings Of Leon lately, so they might be worth a listen if you haven't already.

I'm honestly out of touch with what's popular right now aside from that last one. So if any of this is old news...my bad.
