Title: Let's Give the Council Props when they do something right...

City Council action

Some of the action taken at the Jacksonville City Council meeting Tuesday night:

Issue: Green building program

What it means: The city government will begin using sustainable construction and green building standards for new projects. The bill also offers grants and priority permitting status to companies that voluntarily obtain green certification for their buildings. Bill No. 2009-211 Action: Approved, 16-0.

It's a small step, but at least it's in the right direction.

Agreed.  I wonder if the green movement will be incorporated into the new courthouse?  Should be able to get LEED Platinum X 3 for the money that thing is supposed to cost!

I'm not trying to be a smart ass but while everyone is jumping on the "green" bandwagon shouldn't we promote less new construction and instead focus on adaptive reuse of existing structures? Even though I think this is a better option it still drives me crazy to watch rehab shows where people tear out the old and replace it with new "green" materials. I don't think those dumpster loads in the landfill are very "green".
