So many of the great artists of the city have a studio space in the neighborhood. It seems like there should be a studio crawl.
Lee Harvey, Tommy Armageddon, Mac Tricque and several of the powerhouses of local art all keep working spaces. Its a shame that people don't get to see the process.
That sounds like a good idea!
Do you know if any of the artists have a web presence? This thread could be a good way to list some of them and increase awareness. I have to say that I do not know many of them.
Fantastic idea Stephen! I don't know any of these artists, but I would sign up in a heartbeat to be able to watch the process as you mentioned. I think the neighborhood would really support this.
I like this idea and would definitely crawl.
I'd crawl...and buy some art too, if something tickled my fancy!
Three Layers would love a Crawl! We're in!
It would be nice if such a crawl could be coordinated with showing off some of our existing businesses and the available commercial property in the neighborhood.
Great Idea!
Just a note, Detroit has a growing artistic area much like springfield, someone please check some of these developments out . As part of the Springfield Heart of Jacksonville plan I am working on this project and would like some input. Thank You !
What area of Detroit are you talking about? I'll be up there in about a month.
sorry for the ignorance. I do not know any of these local artists. Where do they exhibit currently?
Probably on the walls of abandoned downtown buildings. Brick walls are the new canvas (see Banksy).
Apparently MOCA sponsored a studio crawl this past weekend...too bad tickets were $35, otherwise I might have participated.
The only reason I knew about it is because my mother is friends with the wife of one of the artists. Not an impressive marketing campaign on MOCA's part to get the word out. No idea what the turnout was like, though.
Isn't Mactruque's studio currently in Springfield (isn't he using the old Boomtown space?)
If this is the case, I wonder what studio of his they toured in Downtown, Riverside, Avondale, San Marco and Ortega?
Thanks, MOCA. Hate to do it, but as a matter of principal, until Springfield gets some of your support, I'll be canceling my support of you through membership and kids camps. I'll be sure to pass info on to other Springfielders who support you, too.
The old Boomtown space has a hole in the roof. I can't imagine the city giving anyone a CO without fixing that situation.
Btw, I could have sworn I saw a Mactruque studio space in the Landing this weekend. Has anyone else noticed this?
I did notice a studio... an artist was working. I could not stop as we were on our way somewhere else.
I think MOCA only sends out notice to people who give them money.
Good article in the Daily Record, a Jim Bailey publication - who is also running for mayor: about Jim Draper's studio in Riverside:

Stephen, et al, with the looming commercial crisis over the next year, I see rent getting cheaper and cheaper or free, just to keep buildings full and maintained. Letting systems sit is not good for the AC or the electrical. And empty buildings are targets for vandals. So again, I see rent getting better next year.

I like JaxByefault's idea and Vanderleigh would love to be part of the art crawl. While we don't have active artist studios we do have a number of vintage paintings by listed and undiscovered artists.
