Urban Neighborhoods: North Shore
(http://photos.metrojacksonville.com/photos/494946915_S5cGJ-M.jpg)
Considered a part of Metro North, North Shore grew as a result of residential expansion north out of downtown and Springfield during the first half of the twentieth century.

There appears to be some well-kept homes in that area. Hopefully one day from downtown to the trout river will look as well maintained.

Here you go. Northshore is the area highlighted in red.

What neighborhood would be on the east side of Main street opposite North Shore?
Panama Park.
I've been living up there for about 5 years now and can tell you that it is a really great area that is priced fairly. Also plans are to take Tallulah to 2 lanes instead of 4 with a turn lane and sidewalks and I think a bike lane (not sure).
A hidden gem I wasn't aware of. I might have to take a trip down there this week to tour the 'hood myself.
I took these pics 4 years ago in what I believe is North Shore, if not it may have been Panama Park, right along the trout river. but i'm curious as to what this area is. Is it simply a ship graveyard?

Yes, that area is Panama Park area. Some yankee developer had a contract on a lot of that area for a while before the market tanked. Supposedly, there was plans of luxury condos and marina.
I just drove through there the other weekend and those ships appear to have been cleared and I saw the signs for the Marina dev. If that ever does get built it will be a boon to that area.
in 2007, that old ship was taking on water.

You are absolutely right. Main St has already been improved. Some new development will bring in some more business.
Didn't they just find a dead body floating in the water at the park there? ???
I went to the last neighborhood association meeting. What happened was a known drug dealer/burglary suspect was urinating in the bushes beside the water and had a seizure (from all the drug usage?) and fell in the water.
He was discovered a few hours later.
I think that happened south of North Shore area.
Lesson learned: Do not urinate next to a body of natural water if you are involved with drugs and prone to seizures.

I know this relates to Panama Park and not North Shore, but i'm really curious about the history of those old ships. They've been there for at least 5 years and I'm just curious as to what the story is. Who owns the property/docks where these ships are parked, etc. What was the ship used for....
Here's a google streetview of the area:

How about this US Geological Survey Map of 1918 (inset and total map)! Or the one below these of 1863! For the link and more such maps, see my MJ post at: http://www.metrojacksonville.com/forum/index.php/topic,4663.0.html(http://fcit.usf.edu/FLORIDA/maps/local/duval/photos/Panama.jpg)

Northshore is a great area and has some wonderful architecture for a reasonable price. It has been called the "Avondale of the Northside". Also, the red highlighted area south of Tallulah is more accurately called Pearl Court- similar age of construction, not nearly as well maintained a neighborhood overall.
Also, regarding the ghost ships of panama park, they have been removed and the entire parcel including extensive Trout River frontage has been cleaned up over the last year. If JSO could ever clean up the 63rd st commerce (drugs & otherwise) that goes on in broad daylight, that entire area would take off. tons of potential
Has anyone been to Jackie's Seafood lately?
The photos don't show any evidence of sidewalks or mixed use. Looks pretty depressing to me, more like outer county sprawl than like Avondale. No matter people would rather live in the outer counties than fix up the North Side- if your urban areas look just like sprawl, what's the advantage. By contrast, Riverside rebounded and Springfield has (somewhat) done the same potential because people look at them and say: "A Choice, Not An Echo!"
