Title: March Art Walk
Post by: David on March 05, 2009, 11:22:25 AM
Who all attended last night's Art Walk?

It's amazing to see how many came out, even with the chilly temperatures. I've been doing art walk since it first started and it's great to see it evolve though the years. The old library is quickly becoming one of my favorite stops on the tour, there's so much going on in that one building.

I'm curious to know if there's some lesser known spots that might get overlooked outside of the Adams/Hogan/Laura st. corridor. Cafe 331 is on the fringes as are the stops on Bay street.

I was there last night and had a great time too. The old library was brimming with people and activities. It has so much potential for weekly events vs. just once a month. Kinda reminded me of the old rave scene minus the designer drugs (at least on my part). There were a couple good funk / jam bands in the back room up stairs which was a pretty cool scene. I also met Tom McManus (ex Jag's LB) while he was doing a book signing. Nothing like going to a cultural event and by a book on football  :D

Tom actually dedicated about 5 minutes of airtime this morning on the radio pumping up this event - not just on his behalf, for the good of the city.  He certainly seems keen on expounding his civic pride.  I love that Artwalk has stuck; it continues to grow & force placeholders on more & more calendars.

I definitely see what you're saying about the library reminding you of the old rave scene. The basement reminds me of that joint evolutions that was in Arlington back in the 90's.

Either way it seems to be work and it's obvious Jacksonvillians are starved for these type of events, even if it's not always about the art and just a reason to get together for some. But hey, it beats a monster truck show (just my opinion, don't get mad monster truck fans).

Also, you can tell the artwalk's popularity has soared in recent years because I never had a trouble finding a parking spot 3, even 2 years ago. Now all the lots are charging for event parking and if you get there after 630, you're parking a good distance away from the epicenter of the action.

The Library Basement is off the hook. This is the stuff we need. I complain about the fundies and the uptight yuppies at art walk but this is all good. The Old Library experimental art and music is the eye opener this city needs and its good to get the conservative peeps through these events because it might make them open up their horizons a little bit. Major props to the gang.
