Whats going on with the Fire Station.
Is it getting torn down or what will be the final disposition of this structure?
There's this:
http://www.jaxdailyrecord.com/showstory.php?Story_id=51569
In the other article, they mention having to 'slice' the building in order to move it underneath any overpasses to a possible new location (not yet determined).
Well, why hasn't anyone suggested moving it up the river by barge to Metro Park? There's the Fire museum there on Kids Kampus - it makes sense to me to put it there to preserve and enjoy.
They want to move Kids Kampus to the park where Friendship fountain now resides...
Yeah, I'm against that idea too.
But if this was put into the official forum, it'd be one helluva wrench in their plans.
How ever do other cities manage to hang on to their historic structures? Why is it so much harder for you Jacksonville?
Its simple. The people calling the shots don't really care for historic preservation or value the history of the community.
Looking for funding to restore and save this structure? Why isn't it on the Stimulus List? It sounds like its "shovel ready" - if not "wrecking ball" ready!
What's wrong with moving it onto land in the Brooklyn area across the street? It would make a great restaurant - or Firehouse subs ;). Hey, maybe Firehouse Subs should buy, move, and restore it into a corporate HQ's in Brooklyn. Now that would be creative!
Yes, that would be creative. Btw, the city did request money for the redevelopment of the proposed park area across the street. IF the station has to be moved, it should be relocated directly across the street in that proposed park.
Tell me again, what is the reason for moving it from it's current location? Is it impossible in this town for a historic building to coexist next to skyscrapers?
It looks that way. The city gave the land underneath it to Fidelity fully knowing that the act would eventually result in demolition.
Just got back from a weekend in Savannah. The place is filled with decrepit old buildings. Clearly the city leaders there have no vision of the future. While strolling among the old buildings I was shocked at the cleanliness of the streets and parks... I saw crews fixing park benches, replacing mulch, and trimming bushes... the city leadership of Savannah are such prudes. And safety?? Don't even get me started... despite people having fun... walking about with DRINKS in their hands... on the actual sidewalks... and not a cop in sight. Public transportation?? Those blithering idiots offer it for free downtown!! How stupid can you get?
Thank God I live in a city that does not waste tax dollars on upkeep, razes old and worn out buildings, has a police car for every officer, ensures the people enjoying a night out behave, and makes people pay for public transportation... :)
Simply shocking what other cities do in their historic areas! Plus they get tourist revenue for it! Disgraceful!! :D
I think we need a "Jax is better than" thread. To keep our chin up.
I'll start.
Jax is better than Alexandria, Lousianna.
Go!

I was their several weeks ago and was equally impressed. I noted in a post elsewhere that even though they have a much smaller "downtown", it appears to be much more active than ours.
Perhaps, one of the next Chamber trips to another city should be go right down I-95 to Savannah and Charleston and see what historic preservation and landscaping can do for a city's economy and self-esteem.

Jax > Palatka
I think they should keep it right where it is and turn it into a restaurant. Firehouse would be an amazing tenant. Fidelity can build around it. With all of the workers around that area, a new restaurant would do very well.
It would be so literal!
Jax is better than every other city in the world because I am here.
You're welcome.
Speaking of converted firehouses, is Burrito Gallery in one of those? I ate there over winter break and definitely felt like it used to be a firehouse.
The building on the corner of Adams and Ocean is a refurbished firehouse. Spectacular dwelling complete with a pole to slide down into the garage area!
It would make a good art gallery.
There's a pub in an old station on North Avenue in Atlanta,
and a bookstore in another station at the MLK,Jr. National Site.

May I PLEASE see the storage facility Dr. Venkman?
I think Fidelity would probably give the building to anyone who wanted it. It is completely S T U P I D that this Firehouse should be demolished. its in great shape. Since Brooklyn Park is now no longer , move into that area and turn it into a night club called...........
Um... The Firehouse?

Couldn't have said it better. Within the past month I have been to both Charleston and Savannah for weekend trips, and both times I've asked myself what is wrong with Jacksonville's perception of a booming city life? Sometimes I think we have our minds too set on sports etc. Don't get me wrong, I love the Jaguars and love all of our sports teams and think they are great, but some people aren't that into sports. Some people would rather spend their Sunday afternoon watching their kids play in the local parks fountain (Charleston) or take a short trip on the rail car to grab lunch (Savannah). Gaaah, reading these post is truly a love/hate for me. I love seeing what Jacksonville could be... I HATE seeing that it's going nowhere!
I agree with you about the "sports" focus, 904Scars. This past Art Walk was as crowded as I've ever seen it. It would be fantastic to see a crowd like that out every Friday and Saturday night, and maybe even on weeknights. All it would take are some interesting commercial endeavors to open up in some empty storefront space.
