The Landing is losing another retailer! It just keeps coming.
From the Jacksonville Daily Record:
"Another casualty of the economy: Discount Pro Wear closed its doors for the last time Friday. The officially-licensed college and pro sports gear store was one of the original tenants when the Landing opened more than 20 years ago. Owner Harold Fine said he has no plans at this time to relocate the business."
They just expanded a few years back too. No surprise. The Landing in it's current state is a complete disaster and an embarassment.
After taking a tour of San Antonio, OKC and New Orleans Riverwalk and Mall.
Uh?
ahem?
Did NEW ORLEANS host the Worlds Fair or did the Worlds Fair host a NEW ORLEANS? (from Newsweek)
Up against this, our landing isn't.
JUST ISN'T
AIN'T
OCKLAWAHA
Discount my butt, they were actually higher than other stores around town.
The place basicaly a gift shop for when a football game was in town. They made a killing off of the Gator Bowl and Ga/Fla games.
There are less expensive items found during Jags games at the stadium...
Walk by it during my lunch break today. All the merchandise was still in the store still. On a positive note, Gold's Gym is coming along quite nicely... They have equipment everywhere!!
That store to me represents the landing's failed business model, surviving on occasional events. That is not intended to sound negative towards that store in the slightest. That whole complex needs businesses with more stability that can make regular money on the people that live, work and play down here.
I have bought several items from that store....I thought their selection was excellent!

That's the City's business model for all of downtown. Read up on the proposed Bay Street improvements. A couple million bucks to support traffic for a dozen or so football games a year, at the expense of the street's business vitality. Downtown is recognized as no more than a big special events district (fireworks, football games, art walk) rather than a working, functioning, living, breathing, dynamic city center.
