Title: Micro Brewery/Taproom in San Marco
Post by: thirdeye on January 20, 2009, 07:45:37 PM
I was just curious if the people on this board think that a Craft Brewery/Taproom in San Marco would work and where would be a good location. I'm looking into starting one and wondered what you all think.
It would be very "micro" in the beginning with hopes of expanding into a brewpub at a later date.

Cheers,

Ben

Yes it would work...anywhere in San Marco would be fine.  Just look how well Bold City Brewery appears to be doing.

How's River City Brewing Company doing?  It's kinda in San Marco.

Yes! At this rate, in a few years we can have a local brew contest...

I can speak for myself and say I'd stop by next time I'm in town.

San Marco would be an excellent location, especially along Hendricks or Atlantic.

When I lived in the Midwest there were multiple microbreweries (in almost every city I lived in) within a few miles of each other and it led to a very competitive environment where the consumers wound up with lots of choices and always a quality product. I definitely encourage you to start one in San Marco, I think the building that tile store is in is an awesome location.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.  I also am wondering how important food service would be to the overall experience. I do not want to get into the restaurant business yet. I would like to focus on making kick ass beer and a cool taproom that serves more as a bar and meeting place than a restaurant.

I also agree that  "friendly" competition is a good thing but I think "truly" local breweries should work together to promote the idea of supporting local breweries

IMO we cannot have enough micro brews or taprooms.  I would think San Marco an awesome location.  I understand not wanting to serve food but beer drinkers do like some crunchy munchies available.  Consider a barrel or two of peanuts in shell similar to five guys... or maybe some freshly popped popcorn etc... :)

That would be great. If it's in San Marco why not use the location of Uncommon Grounds since there relocating.

Also, focus on the beer first, don't worry about food.

I think it would absolutely work. And I would hardly count River City as competition or even a brewery. It's far too stuffy and the food is over priced.

Also agree with you about local breweries working together. You should try to make arrangements with Bold City to maybe carry one or two of their drafts along with yours.

I'm not a smoker but if you didn't serve food or kept it minimal you could cater to smokers.  I think their only current San Marco option is Sherwoods.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Kings Ave area. Rents might be more reasonable along with more parking. I also know it is off the beaten path and will need to be a destination to draw customers.

What about that extension they built onto the building Jack Rabbits is in? It seems they will have some vacant spaces. This may also create some synergy between the two places to attract people to both.

Obviously being in Springfield, I'd love to see you over here, in like say the old henrietta's space at 9th and main.  But I got no problem driving over to San Marco.

But Joe, you guys already have Shanty, which might not be brewery but it's still one of the best places in town to drink. San Marco doesn't really have any chill, middle of the road type bars.

The extension next to Jack Rabbits would be a great spot but somewhere off of Kings ave might be more affordable.

I wonder if Local's old location is still vacant?

I also noticed on the way home that the strip La Nopalera is in has a vacancy. It looks like it might have been a restaurant before. That place would have good exposure, food close by, and available parking. Cost would probably be an issue though.

Locals & Sherwoods are good "middle of the road" bars. I think the bar part is the smaller attraction of a micro-brew anyways... taking a growler home of ever changing local brews is what excites me.

They are, but they aren't exatcy "pubish" for lack of a better word. Maybe it's just me but they have more of biker bar type feel to them. Locals doesn't carry any draft, and I know a lot of people who hate how smokey Sherwoods is.

I'd say something in vein of Kickbacks, Bold City or London would be perfect for San Marco.

I had another question...How much would our beers being organic mean to most beer drinkers in our community?
Title: Re: Micro Brewery/Taproom in San Marco
Post by: BridgeTroll on January 25, 2009, 06:56:12 PM
I would hesitate to pay more for organic beer... unless the taste was a significant upgrade.

No care about organic...just want a delicious beer for under $4 a pint.

Thanks for the comments about the whole "organic" idea. After doing more research and taking everyones comments into account the cost of organic grains makes the beer and its price not what I was looking for.I still am going to use organic grains when possible but 100% organic beer is just too expensive and from what I have read not always better.

Cheers!!

Yo Ben. Brian from Bold City here. There is a building off of Hendricks that we looked @ prior to settling on our present location. It's across from Jack Rabbits and I believe use to be an old JEA building. It's a cool building and could definitely work. Brewers work together, That's just how we roll!!!

Cheers

Hey Brewers, how about ease up on the hops just a tad and take some of the edge off... You know Southrons love "Sweet" drinks. Call it Ocklawaha River Water! HA!

Speaking of IPA I just got back from LA and had some Racer 5 IPA, talk about hops!

Anyways, I'm all for another micro brewer in Jax. Bold City to me is the only one we have since you can get it at numerous locations and can take some home unlike 7 bridges, and River City.

By the way the new Bold city taps by Kendrick look awesome.

Yeah, he did the Mad Manatee IPA, Dukes Cold Nose Brown Ale, and Starry Lights Rye Wheat. He also added a new logo which is a huge improvement in my opinion.

Kendrick is my design mentor. He is very talented illustrator - I love love love the Duke's one.  Him and I worked together several years ago when I was an intern.  Unfortunately, we only touch base now about 2 a year - but I know he is a busy, busy man.  He introduced me to Grolsch too - mmmm!

Bump?  I know this thread kind of died off, but I think it is so great that people are using this forum to help their businesses.  The posters are definitely not shy about voicing their opinions and serve as a great bank of information.  I hope thirdeye and Intuition Ale Works experience success soon.  Bold City could use some competition (especially for their brown ale and stout).

And I hope that brewery success could be located at School #4. Plenty of space, magnificent structure, customers could park under the I-10/95 overpass…

Oh right, $$$$

What about the old Fuel Coffehouse in 5 points? There is also a nice empty space over in Park and King a few doors north of Pizza Palace. Since it seems be trending more upscale, I think San Marco is more in need of a place like this http://www.thewineroomonline.com/

Bewler,

Is PS #4 Annie Lytle? A perfect location for a brew pub. You might enlist the alleged ghosts to assist in the brewing process.  8)

Annie Lytle could be a really cool place to have a brewery...but Fuel is already wired for serious Brew production....Look on the back of the building for a view of the serious conduit.

Yes it is. I always forget it's real name.

That's a good idea about the ghosts actually. You could have one beer brand called the haunted brew or something and give it an appropriate theme.

A micro-brew in Jacksonville would be great.  I just visited Portland, Or. and that city is filled with good local beers.  Good luck.
