Hightide Burrito put up a sign this sometime this week announcing their arrival in San Marco. It’s owned by Alex Juarez and appears to be a franchise out of Charlottesville, NC. From an article at charlottesville-dining.com
QuoteHigh Tide has that beachy-Mexican fusion vibe to it, but with less of a California surfer dude and more of a Southern, Kenny Chesney feel to it.
Whoa! That’s an interesting mix. I honestly don’t care what the atmosphere is like, if the burritos are better than Moe’s, I’m down. Charlottesville reviews are mixed, but I’ll wait to reserve judgement until I try it myself.
Man, I HATE Moe's...............Welcome to town.
Hightide, Oral Explosion, etc? I guess San Marco must not be doing that bad after all.
So much for the prediction that 75% of all entertainment/dining businesses would be out of business. :D
I saw the the Hightide Burrito sign the other day driving up Hendricks. The Urban Market, a new Mediterranean/Greek restaurant and new Jazz Club are opening in Springfield in the next couple of months. I've heard that the owners of Three Layers might be opening a Wine Bar in the back of Three Layers too! Things are looking up in Springfield also!!!
Where will the jazz club be located?

That alone makes me not want to go there.
The Jazz Club is going in at 8th and Pearl. I am going to try to stop by this week to see if I can get some information.
The name High Tide has that beachy, California surfer dude vibe, so if they were going for Kenny Chesney, they are mis-named (of course, maybe the Kenny Chesney bit is just how they are modifying their pitch for our oh-so sophisticated market).
If they are anything like Wahoo's on the West coast, they'll be great.
Mediterranean/Greek place naming sucks, too. The Urban Market? Mike, how about Wafaa's - as your wife will be the chef, and that's her name, and it's alludes to the product mix, give it some thought, please. It's got to be better than Urban Market - ugh!
To all restaurant and retailers, naming, merchandising, and a solid product/service/operational mix DO matter.
Zoo, Urban Market is at the Cesary project.

Hopefully this one serves burritos with less than 1000 calories.
I only caught a glance as I drove by, but high tide looked pretty open today at lunch as there were people sitting at the tables.... I'll double check on my way home.
Has anyone ever eaten at one? I'm curious as to what makes them stand out.
My mistake, I was under the assumption that this was a chain restaurant.
they aren't a chain, that's wrong. I am gonna stop by some time soon and report back.
There is a restaurant in Charlottesville, VA with the name High Tide Burrito. I believe that is what caused confusion.
I caught that right after I posted. When I skimmed over a post from someone earlier in the thread, I gathered the impression they had already been there.

That makes it even better that it's a local thing! What's Jacksonville's ranking on America's fattest cities again?
Jacksonville loves chinese take out and 1000 calorie burritos.
They're open! While driving home on my lunch break I saw a lady standing with a "now open" sign on the side of Hendricks so I did a pretty swift turn into the parking lot to give them a try.
I tried two tacos with adobe beef (or protein) as they like to call the meat called there. I doused them in their hot sauce, which is actually pretty spicy as my mouth is still burning at this moment. I'm going to reserve any critique or voicing of an opinion until I've tried out several of their entrees, as there was 4 others I was curious to try as well.
I'm eager to hear everyone's input about the place. The decor is pretty sleek as you can see in the pictures posted in the May 2009 downtown construction update. I got my order to go since my apt's so close, but it looks like a place I’d have no problem spending some time in. As for right now I believe they're only open for lunch.
yeah i saw the same thing will have to check it out later this week, looked like they were hopping to day.
Having local ownership, I hope they succeed.
The outside patio was open today and the inside looked packed.
My taco was good very fresh. The chips and guacamole were good also. 7 dollars for lunch. I will go again.
finally made it had the cactus and mushrooms on a salad with hot salsa and there hibscus drink. I really enjoyed the meal, although some hot sauce choices would be nice.
Adobe beef, cactus, hibscus drink! I definitely gotta check this place out!

UGH, i just ate there and im not impressed. I had a chicken burrito with cilantro lime rice, beans, hot salsa, cheese and lettuce. It was very bland and the chips tasted like crackers. The place is nice inside and looks very clean, but sorry to say, but even Moe's taste better than this place. I'll stick with Burrito Gallery though for similar food.
I ate there Saturday and had a fish burrito. I thought it was pretty good, but I will order the fish on a taco next time. I wish I was adventurous enough to try the cactus, but not yet. Going back to try out their beef. I would say that if they are trying to be not 'beach and surf dude', they are doing an awful job. There are pictures of waves on the wall and the logo has a wave in it...... I thought the deco was awesome, but nothing Kenny Chesney about it.
I'm going to have to agree with The Compound on this. I was able to sample a few of the meats available, and if it wasn't really greasy, it was bland city. The only redeeming thing about the restaurant was the chips. If they could spice things up a bit, I'd be more inclined to return for a third time.
No sweet tea on the menu...La Nop wins again.
Agua Fresca is a really good drink if you've never had it...
I actually really liked their chips. What I didn't like was how they charged .50 per small salsa container. Sorry but I likes me some bucket loads of salsa. You can get several different varieties of it, as much as you want, and for free at Moe's. That's right, MOE'S.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to get back to shopping at major chain stores and petitioning for more strip malls to be made.
Tried this place a couple days ago. Not all that impressed. The service was VERY slow. The food was fairly bland. I had to wait an extra 6 minutes just for a fish taco (sat down about 20 minutes after arriving - was 3rd in line).
The guy wanted to leave my chicken taco sitting out (made) while he cooked up some fish. I think not. The chicken although it looked like it was going to have some flavor - had none.
I really didn't care for the upsell on the salsa. An extra 50 cents for a little tiny cup of salsa. Come on guys - give it up. Shouldn't have to pay extra for that.
I'll give them another try, but it's not looking good so far. The decor was a high note. Had high hopes for Hightide - maybe they'll do better next time.
Although I agree on the extra 50 cents for what seems to be 1/4 oz of salsa, you can't argue with the $1 fountain drinks...
Nice to have another lighter option in town (if you skip the chips), but it's too bland to keep me driving to San Marco.
I thought that everyone else would love it, seeing has how bland food is what I preceive to be a problem at several beloved JAX establishments. I now have some hope . . . but I've just about given up my quest for awesome fish tacos in this town.
QuoteI've just about given up my quest for awesome fish tacos in this town.
Mossfire Grill, Burrito Gallery, or TacoLu (@ the Beach)
Thanks for the info, blizz. Mossfire is roundly terrible on nearly everything. BG's fish tacos are great (especially dressed with their slaw), but not the style that I miss.
I had high hopes for the fried fish tacos at High Tide, but the lack of corn tortilla or slaw makes them a no-go, too.
TacoLu?...I'll give it shot nexttime I'm beaches way!
You really owe it to yourself as they're hands down the best in the area. Beer Battered or Blackened Mahi, Spicy Shrimp, Ahi Tuna & Salmon tacos are resident on the menu, however, there's always a "special" - I went there earlier today & they had pan-seared scallop tacos with avocado filled centers. That said, I'm a sucker for the cheeseburger tacos - they even include the mustard! Check the review & menu:

Ate here, finally, last night after art walk, as burrito gallery was packed as usual and it was ok. The chips I thought were great, but I have to agree about the tiny bit of salsa they hand you. I did look at the guy and say that is all? But it was ok, I don't have anything bad to say about the place!
Gotta agree with The Compound, CMG 22 and Exnewsman. Very bland. The chips were fantastic! The burritos themselves were terrible. Flavorless. I threw a third of mine in the trash. My fiancee got tired of biting down on hard rice (undercooked or just sitting out all day? We were there around 2 PM on a Saturday, I think... place was empty). Didn't help that the girl serving us couldn't care any less whether or not we were there.
We left and went to Chipotle's all the way out at the Town Center. Not exciting or anything, but definitely a decent burrito. And at least they were pleasant behind the counter.
^ I'm surprised that folks are finding the food bland. I thought everything was very tasty and I wouldn't consider my taste buds plain. Maybe it has to do with expectations or what items you selected for the burrito.
What they also need to improve is the exit alleyways. Who wants to drive through that muddy crap after a hard rain. Wouldn't cost much to have some rocks put down and I'm sure the residents on the alley would appreciate it. Perhaps split the costs with other merchants who share the alley. That's what I did for part of the alleyway within my block.
I hope the owners are reading these posts. I think they would be invaluable to making tweaks to continue to attract and retain customers.
Palm Valley Fish camp has the best fish taco I have ever had.... I highly suggest taking a ride and trying it out. Here is their site....

I ate there and thought it was awful. Cold tacos... no warm meat, no melted cheese. Extra for salsa.. no hot sauce selection. I was going to do a review on them shortly after they opened, but refrained in an attempt to give them some time to work out the kinks before offering up any negative commentary.
I love Burrito Gallery and La Nops, so I doubt I'll take the risk of going back. My next Mexican endeavor will be Taco Lu's for scallop tacos.
QuoteTaco Lu's for scallop tacos.
I'm gonna go ahead & call it - the best!
I'll give it a try, but highly doubt it can keep up with burrito gallery!!
