The release date was 11/26 and it is still not playing in Jacksonville. According to a blog posting on Jacksonville.com from 12/09, Milk would arrive in Jacksonville on the 12th. That never happened and the blog post was removed. This is embarassing. This film is a likely Academy Award nominee for Best Picture, Best Actor, multiple Best Supporting Actors and Best Director. And nobody in Jacksonville can see it unless you drive to Orlando, Savannah, Atlanta or Charlotte.
did brokeback mountain play in jax?

Like most films with a less baptist theme it will come, just later. The AMC at Regency is playing it in two weeks
Thanks. Better late than never I suppose. I would have liked to have seen the Five Points Theater show it when it was first released.
Very limited release.
Tampa has but 1 theater with it, Miami has a couple.
When it hits regular release, it will be here. Its a marketing gimmick.
oh, i didn't realize it was so limited. i dont feel as ashamed of this town now...
Stephen, did you ever meet Harvey? I knew of him and thought he had brass ones --- not that I ever checked. But we were all there straights and gays cheering him on.
When Dan shot Harvey and the mayor, I was down in Long Beach ( I think) . It was like the world had ended. Then they let the BASTARD go with only 5 years, because it was caused by an overdose of "TWINKIES".
I can't wait for the movie, we ought to get a group to go see it. It would be fun to cheer Harvey on - one more time!

Well just remember, if you ever get nailed for something serious in good old CALIFORNIA, "The Twinkies Made Me Do It." Crying when they slap your hand is great for effect too!
What about a viewers group? Anyone?

It's playing in Savannah so it cannot be that limited.
I can't wait to see it...when it gets here. Focus did the same sort of limited viewing with Brokeback. They tend to pick larger, more liberal cities to start with and then branch from there. A lot of it has to do with marketing. They know the movie will do well in open minded cities and the buzz is generated there and then passed along as more and more cities start showing the film. I'll be patient, even though it is hard knowing so many of my friends in other cities have already seen it.
I know what you mean. I have a group of friends in NYC and they have seen almost all of the good movies that won't be here for a month. I just wonder how long we have to wait for The Wrestler.
I think the business owners of this town believes that Jacksonville is a very homophobic town and are hesitant to show movies such as this. However, I honestly don't believe that describes Jacksonville at all. Most people are accepting with the exception of a few. It may cause a little stir when it does come but it will die out.
I don't remember Brokeback Mountain coming to Jacksonville but of course, I don't go and see movies very often. I did buy it on DVD and in all honesty, didn't care much for it. Beautiful scenery but that's about it.

Thank you jandar... I was beginning to think there was a conspiracy of some sort... :)
It's also part of the Academy Awards process. A movie has to be shown in Los Angeles*, during a year to be eligible for that year's Oscars. This happens with lots of "Oscar-worthy" films - limited release in late December, then everywhere in early January.
QuoteFrom Wikipedia
official Academy Awards Rules, a film must open in the previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January 1 to midnight at the end of December 31, in Los Angeles County, California, to qualify

I understand what you are saying about limited v. wide release. But that does not explain why it is showing in Tampa, Charlotte, Savannah, Miami and Atlanta but not Jacksonville. Are we not a top 50 market in this country? We have a million people. Why can we not be culturally ahead of Des Moines, Boise and Walla Walla?
I would love to be able to go to the theater and watch O'Horten, My Winnipeg or Let the Right One In but they never play here. I was glad to see Happy Go Lucky is playing at the Regency 24. I wonder what kind of crowds they are getting. I remember going to see Rushmore at the Orange Park 24 and a few people actually booed when it was over.
Who cares? It appears to be nothing more than a political motivated movie anyway.
River, I'm sorry you are a lonely old man who has nothing in life to look forward to. Why must your bitterness and hate ruin every thread? Can't you just let some people live their lives in peace? If I am excited about seeing a movie, then let me discuss it without your ugly head interfering. I'm going to pray for you at church tonight; that you will find some happiness in your life that doesn't come from hurting other people. Merry Christmas!

Explain
River, Harvey was certainly political, but not always in lock step with the liberals. He stomped Feinstien in several battles where the old (straight) community was losing their homes to new social projects. He was a homosexual and made no effort to hide it. Interesting, I don't think it was he that went after that fame as some sort of "Queer Nation Radical Leader", the press thrust him into that spotlight.
This guy was very much like the fist black baseball players, first "coloreds through the school house door" etc... You didn't have to agree with him, but you saw a man with passion for his people. No not his "homosexual friends" but ALL OF THE PEOPLE in his district. His door was always open.
I went into SF as a quite consertative guy (for a hippie), frankly I wasn't real thrilled with Harvey or Pat Brown, Angela Davis or the whole lot of them. Yet when Harvey went to bat for my friends, I realized here was a man with something more then the press fed "HOMO-POLICIAL" role. Harvey was a real man. In the end so was Governor Jerry Brown, who followed in Pat's footsteps.
Harvey may not have been Moses, leading his homosexual causes out of the closet (as the movie may or may not portray) but more of a, Spartacus - the man that fought back. In that light Dan murderer of both the Mayor and Harvey played the role of Licinius Crassus (Oh I know, WHO? ...the forgotten Roman General that defeated Spartacus).
I'm not expecting this to be some kind of kinky "Homo Recruiting Film" that some people on these boards seem to fear. I don't even think it's about a Liberal and his insane opponet. More likely it's about a man on a mission - agree or not - who just happened to be brave enough to out himself before there even was such a term.
I was there man. You didn't have to agree with anything he said and yet you would find yourself cheering for the man.
FYI, Did y'all know Harvey died in poverty? Yes he was a high ranking official in SF, but he gave it away... When they cleaned out his place his suits were falling apart, shoes and socks had holes in them.
If I'm not mistaken, his life mate hung himself. I can't wait for the film.

I just saw "Milk" and it was an excellent movie. I really hope that it makes it to the theaters here.

Thank you for your concern and prayers and Merry Christmas to you too. :)
Just back from Milk. Okay, the first 10 minutes I really regretted going to see it(In Austin, TX), because found it annoying and insufferable. After the first hour I didnt want it to end. It was really good. For some reason my eye got sweetie or something at the end during the 30,000 person march after the assasination. When it gets to Jax go see it.
Milk starts this Friday in Jacksonville.
I was in San Francisco last March & they were filming a scene on the steps of a building just outside my window (from The Fairmont) - they said it was "the famous courthouse speech" or something along that line.....Anyway, that was pretty cool.
It has been playing in Gainesville, FL since it came out.
I saw it at the Enzian in Maitland, and it is an awesome movie. I highly recommend seeing it, I rarely get moved, but it almost made me tear up.
It was a very moving movie for anybody straight or gay. It offers a look a into movement of people from repression into progression. I see it is playing at AMC Regency and Organge Park starting this Friday. I highly recommend it!
