Title: Last Jax Hooters Closes After 40 Years
Post by: jaxlongtimer on October 03, 2026, 01:50:04 PM
As I recall, this was Hooters #2, after their first store in Clearwater.  And, it led, briefly, to Hooters' headquarters being in Jacksonville before moving to Atlanta.

QuoteAfter 40 years, Jacksonville's last Hooters restaurant abruptly closes

Known for chicken wings and female servers in skimpy shorts and tight T-shirts, the first and only Hooters left in Jacksonville abruptly closed permanently after recent inspections cited dead roaches and rat droppings.

Dating back to 1986, the sports bar at 8938 San Jose Blvd. overlooking Goodbys Creek in Mandarin was the oldest and last of three Hooters in Northeast Florida...

...Hooters, headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., was founded in 1983 in Clearwater, Fla. The chain had about 208 locations in the United States as of Feb. 11, according to ScrapeHero, a widely recognized web scraping and data service.

I note, too, this is the second major "sports bar" on San Jose to close recently.  Player's Grille just closed too and is being converted to a new concept.

QuotePlayers Grille Mandarin location sold; kosher-style deli and bakery on the way

The Players Grille location in Mandarin is finished, but the restaurant site will soon see new life.

Brian Bell and Will Layton have taken over the space with plans to develop the 5,000-square-foot location into Bell & Layton's Deli, a kosher-style deli and bakery that is expected to open in the fall.

The business partners were searching for a location for months to bring back an Old World sandwich destination that Jacksonville lost when Worman's Bakery and Deli closed after nearly 100 years in Jacksonville. They connected with Players owner Phil Visali just three weeks ago, after a separate commercial deal fell through, and moved quickly to close on the location at 10140 San Jose Blvd...

Players Grille in San Jose changed their menu about 12-18 months ago at that location and it was terrible. I think they kinda gave up at that location.

Appropriately, it will become a Jewish Deli and Bakery which is great as the area needs a place like this.

RIP Hooters. Great location for a nice waterfront restaurant.
