Sorry for the Megabox (or that guy who was trying to hype up the dining scene at the towncenter. Glynn?) style random question, but this has really been bothering me and I just need to ask. Why are the satellite views of downtown Jax so out of date? Projects have been built for 5 years and they're nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, downtown Gainesville seems to be updating in real time. Brooklyn actually has a bit of infill now, but you wouldn't know it by looking online.
Good question. It still shows the Landing for goodness sake!
It looks like Streetview was updated in June 2021 for the downtown-Brooklyn area.
I'm going to take an educated guess and say that they update aerial imagery based on usage.
It may be because aerial photos of vacant lots are so boring.
The images are from Dec 2018 or Jan 2019. Can tell by the gator bowl paint in the stadium. Its crazy how old that is. The intracoastal area seems to get updated a couple times a year... current images are only a few months old.
The area north of Regency looks to be a few years old. A built-out subdivision is about half done, and nearly done apartments have not even started, and another completed set of apartments are just getting underway.
I've spent a LOT of time on Google Earth over the years and have wondered why the updates downtown are so far apart. I do know that they tend to update the images during the winter on a clear day. This allows a deeper view of the ground without the leaves on the trees. And the images, on average, are usually about a year old. Perhaps this is for security reasons?
Frankly, I'm glad the DT image hasn't been updated because I nearly throw up in my mouth every time I see or think of the Landing travesty...
Looking at Google Earth today. Jacksonville has been updated. The Landing is no longer there, the I-10/I-95 interchange and the Fuller Warren SUP are there, the Hart Ramps along Gator Bowl Boulevard (or is it Bay Street) are gone. The residential north of Regency Mall I mentioned are now there.

Awesome! Thanks for the update!
The Landing has been erased forever.... :-(
Google Earth historical view, or Google Maps historical street view.
