Appropriately named for a 47 year TV weatherman (one of the longest stints in local news anywhere), Winterling made his mark early on, correctly predicting Hurricane Dora to hit Jacksonville in 1964, long before technology could generate good data on such storms or forecasters could accurately predict same.
He also created "humiture" combing the feel of heat with humidity that the National Weather Service soon adopted as the "heat index."
I grew up with his low key, just-give-us-the-weather, forecasts and remember, fondly, his writing area and national temperatures on a map with a black magic marker as he read them off ;D. When he started in 1962, we only had 2 TV stations, Channels 4 and 12, so he pretty much had most of the eyeballs in town.
Coincidentally, he has died on the first day of summer.
Another Jacksonville institution falls away....

Sad to hear this. My parents were devoted Channel 4 watchers, so he was a constant of my childhood.
Same, here. And who could ever forget his 'special' collaboration with NORAD on Christmas Eve night - reporting they had spotted Santa's sleigh in the sky over Jacksonville! Rest in Peace, George.
