The Jacksonville Port Authority has completed $100 million in berth improvements at Blount Island that allow the port to simultaneously handle two of the largest cargo ships.

So, now that we have dredged the river and built this infrastructure, courtesy of the taxpayers, have we begun receiving the giant Panamax ships that this was done to accommodate? If not, when?
Have not heard much about this but Jax should vigorously pursue this... Fincantieri Marine is a proven performer...

Will the Baltimore harbor closure affect Jaxport? I would think some of that traffic will be distributed along the east coast...

This is happening. They are currently working on the bulkhead improvements needed for the drydock
They have more info about the dry dock that they will be bringing to the Jax shipyard:

Can Lake/someone explain to me why Jacksonville is the 'home' for Naval repairs/modernization? Every year the business journal publishes the absurd market concentration that we have here. Is there a reason why firms like BAE (& Fincantieri) set up & are expanding here? I'm guessing something to do with cheap waterfront on deep enough water near a naval base?
I've been reading a lot on the shortage of shipbuilding labor, just curious to know how it all ties together.
The simple answer is Mayport and the type of, and large numbers of those ships stationed there. Norfolk services larger ships, carriers, and submarines. Kings Bay services Ohio class submarines, and Groton services attack boats...
And there are more on the Gulf coast and obviously more yet on the west coast...

Bridgetroll's answer is correct. This is an area that Jax should continue to build upon economically. There are certain industries we're more naturally suited for than others. There are a bunch of decent paying trades that the local kids not going to college should be trained for. Instead, we're having to go outside of the region to fill a lot of these jobs.
