Title: Whiteway Deli moving
Post by: tashi on November 03, 2008, 02:49:56 AM
I saw that Whiteway Deli is moving from the Whiteway Corner (they have been at that location since 1927). They are moving across the street from First Guarantee Bank.

Has a date been given for the move? They've been working on the location on and off for over a year and only recently have been working steady on it.

The sign said December.

I figured this was coming eventually. I get my hair cut at "HAIR!", which also used to be in whiteway plaza but they recently moved over to Roosevelt/hwy17.

The folks at Hair told me the current landlord at whiteway is a total azz$ole, and plays stupid games all the time. Additionally, he refuses to do maintenance, tries to jack up the rent regularly, and refuses to sign more than a 12-month lease period at each renewal, etc., etc.

The salon wound up moving to a more expensive space somewhere else, just so they wouldn't have to put up with him anymore. Same kind of thing happened with the grocery store. And I bet that's what happened with the deli too.

Pretty soon, they'll have no tenants left if they keep going at this rate. Jacksonville is hardly at a loss for unused commercial space.

I hear that about the landlord/owner too. I live around the area and everyone keeps talking about how the area is going to get blighted again (the owner did not care about the property at all several years ago and Whiteway Corner looked like hell). I have seen so many businesses leave that area over and over again, and the main complaint is the owner of Whiteway Corner. Whiteway has a high turnover.

As for the grocery store, that building is owned by someone else and the store owner had to move, so that is why it closed.
