We are moving to Jax and plan to move to Springfield. My parents sent me a website with crime stats showing that the area code of Springfield compared to Newark, Detroit and New Orleans is worse than all three. I find this really hard to believe as I have had a lot of correspondence with people living with families in Springfield and they always say they feel perfectly safe. Can this information be right???
Michelle
No, it's not....and the 32206 area covers a great deal more than just Historic Springfield. Most of the crimes that are reported would be in a bad section called Lincoln Court, behind Shands hospital, which is not in historic Springfield.
Its better to look at a smaller area. The zip includes quite a few bad areas outside of Springfield.

I live in Springfield. Check out www.coj.net, go to Sheriff's Office, then crime search. You can type and address in and get crime stats within a half mile radius. As stated above there are a few bad areas on the fringe of Springfield which add considerable to these figures. I am perfectly happy with my decision to move here. It is very quiet here at night and we have great neighbors.
It has not affected my desire to live in the neighborhood, (I figured there was an explanation) but my parents are starting to get to my husband;) I think they want me to live in a gated community in St. Johns:) Not that there is anything wrong with st. Johns, it's just not for me.
I am very happy to be able to show them the websites posted.
Thanks,
Michelle
I just moved from suburbia. Yeah you can live in a gate community where everyone drives into their garage and doesn't know each other or you can live in a neighborhood that is near downtown and the river where most people know each other and have plenty of community parties, sports teams, festivals, etc.

You can find crime anywhere. Murders occur in every single social economic group, every nieghborhood and in every city, town, burg, what have you. Jacksonville is as safe as you believe it to be. If you wish to worry about being robbed, you will be worried and not feel safe. Don't worry about it, the worry makes you old before your time. Does it happen to nice people? Yes, but here is no worse, really, that there, where ever there is. Want to come to Jacksonville? Then come. Rather just worry about crime? Then stay were you are - it may be cheaper to stay put and worry than move and worry.
Crime really should not be taken lightly, but sometimes you can make it worse by worrying. Being concerned is fine, but concern and therefore the actions you might take to minimize those concerns are different than not moving someplace because of the worry over crime. There are always some areas that no one wants to move to. Springfield should not be one of them.
As far as crime goes like some one said it happens every where. Saying dont move to Jax is just like saying that the place I do choose will be free of crime. Just be aware of your surroundings, get an alarm, get to know your neighbors.
There seems to be a lot of people moving from NJ lately, I met three people this past weekend moving form NJ. What is (or maybe better yet is NOT) going on in NJ?

What you have to understand is that crime is bad in Jacksonville. If you can avoid to move to Jacksonville... avoid it. But if you have to move to Jacksonville, Springfield is a good place to live.
Where is this crime free utopia you allude to? ::)

Extremely high taxes for one
one of my very best friends lives just outside of Haddonfield in Camden County NJ and I always make fun of the fact that he lives in one of the most crime infested places in all of the US (camden county). Of course anyone who's been to Haddonfield or the surrounding areas knows that its beautiful and isn't a crime infested hellhole, but is unfortunately in a county that is. So a lot of those stats are bogus unless you're planning on buying in the heart of "the hood" aka Lincoln Court or locally known as "the bloodiest block". Good luck.
Exactly! I know Haddonfield and it's a lovely area

Jacksonville has long been a popular relocation choice for New Jerseyans. In the late 90's I made about 7 long term friendships with recent transplants from North & South Jersey. They set up base down here and the onslaught of friends & family moving down has been nonstop since then. I can't quite speak for North Jersey as only the minority of my friends are from there, but South Jersey definitely feels similar to the outskirts of Jacksonville in some areas.
Plus it's cheaper here, it's warmer and Jerseyites are pretty down to earth people like us (plus it seems the rest of the north talks smack on NJ the same way the rest of Florida talks smack on us) so Jacksonville really does seem like a good fit for those from up that way.
If you notice New Yorkers tend to migrate to the more bustling, populated regions downstate whereas Jersey peeps seem to settle in nicely here. In short, the good people of New Jersey were trying to make it to South Florida but ran outta gas after they crossed the state line so they said meh, screw it! why not live here? :D
I always ask people from the north why or how did you end up here in Jax of all places. Many of them state they already have family living here.
Almost every new resident I have met here is from out of state. CA, OH, GA, NY, NJ are the states that come to mind. That is what adds to the diversity of the neighborhood. We have met so many great friends since moving here six months ago. I looked up the crime stats for my address tonight. I wish it would map out where the crimes actually happened. I would guess that 90% are isolated to a few problem properties and don't effect the rest of the residents. Can't wait until the government bulldozes all the H.U.D. properties.
The funny thing is, after I started this post, I decided to check the crime stats on the town I live in now. Boy was I surprised! I live downtown, but always felt very safe and walk and bike everywhere daytime or nighttime. So, even though the crime stats are high, being without tv and therefore not watching the news, I just was not aware of it. It also does not change my routine and wether or not I will let my kids walk a couple of blocks to a friends house.
why is it that I keep hearing from different posters that if I can avoid moving to jax I should??? I am actually really looking forward to it...
Michelle
I like Jax a lot. I've lived in Vermont, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida Gulf Coast, North Carolina, and Virginia...
A city is what you make of it.

Yeah of all the people I know, family connections or work seem to be the main reasons that they move here. It almost seems like to me that the non-natives outnumber the native Jacksonvillians.
