Canada and California banning gas cars by 2035, Britain by 2030. Will the U.S. set a date as well?

This is the sort of thing that leads to Alberta joingin the US.
I doubt there'd be an outright federal mandate anytime soon, Michigan is too important in the electoral college to make it happen. But from the look of things there's a decent chance that the foreign mandates and market forces will generally guide the industry to making the change by itself anyway, perhaps by the late 2030s at worst. GM is already rebranding around electrification, Ford's F-150 Lightning is only the beginning for them, and Stellantis just had their EV Day.
The bigger challenges at this point are going to be all the ICE cars that already exist and will join the roads before sales end, as well as the larger issues of designing a society around car ownership in general.

I am not sure Michigan cares about this as long as people buy cars - period. Seems Texas might care the most given it's oil that is endangered, not cars. States like Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alaska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Pennsylvania, if I have my oil producing states right, might also care a bit.
Yeah, but even if they ban gas vehicles from being sold, there will be many, many on the road for a long, long time. Its not like all the gas cars will just cease to exist.

Fair point about the complications of attaining and processing the rare earth minerals needed to power fully electric vehicles but I'm sure it's not lost on all of these other countries the recklessness of having more internal combustion engine vehicles emitting pollutants and greenhouse gasses and not promoting cleaner more environmental friendly all electric cars and trucks even with the issues that their creation hold. Any alternative source of energy or transport have their own set of alternative problematics. This is unavoidable but promising advances in research and technology will find potential ways of mitigating these issues. However we are quite aware of all of the problems burning fossil fuels pose so why should we slow walk the continued development of EV production and technology in order to keep auto manufacturers from suffering a collective emotional and financial sad?
And if anyone still thinks we should still be as reliant as possible on total ICE cars because of concerns over rare earth minerals, keep in mind we still need them to help run our phones, tablets, laptops, and flat-screens. Would you suggest we try to transition back to land lines, desktop computers, and heavy bulky cathode ray Zenith televisions? Or we could keep pursuing better more efficient less polluting ways of extracting these rare earth minerals from our own soil to use them to improve our way of life far beyond transportation.
