It appears someone found a way to activate the lawn formerly known as the Landing.
QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville police are investigating an incident in which someone vandalized the park at the site of the former Jacksonville Landing.
During the overnight hours, someone drove a vehicle onto the grass and did doughnuts on the lawn before driving off. It's unclear exactly what time the vandalism took place.
For many, the lawn at the Landing is a nice place to visit, particularly with a good friend. Stephan Spicer and his dog live a few blocks away from the park by the river and visit about three times a day.
"It's terrible. I saw it this morning," Spicer said of the deep ruts left in the sod by a driver who ripped up the grass.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? What do you mean leaving a big empty lot in the center of an urban core resulted in criminal activity?
Gotta be Sleiman.
He's clearly bitter that the city took his grass lot, and all he's got to show for it is $23 million in cash and a portfolio of successful real estate developments everywhere else in the city.
Someone making a statement that if they had left the Landing there, or built something else meaningful there, they wouldn't have vandalized it or did doughnuts on it. That's what they get!!!
Donuts.
Downtown development.
Anonymous statement.
Has to be former Jaxson member ... sanmarcomatt

I guess JAX has its newest Dog Park now. No need for one over by the library.
I have never seen any signage stating that you cannot drive on the grass...
^To be fair, it should be implied from the last five years that only the city is allowed to destroy downtown property.

Good point. What would make this sod any different from the lawns at the Shipyards and City Hall Annex/Courthouse demo sites?
It's public art representing the "rut" downtown is perpetually in. And, it meets all the requirements for developing the courthouse lawn so look for it to be replicated ;).
well there are no doughnut shops downtown

Hmmm also sounds like an example of tactical urbanism and placemaking.

Just saw this late tonight. Laughing so loud I woke my wife.
Yup. He left us....wanting more. Still in San Marco, lurking.
Dowtown is not in a rut. Southbank is on fire.

Brooklyn, Southbank and Stadium District are not what most people would call the "real downtown." It has just become convenient to stretch the term to cover those areas for (1) the reason you stated, those areas are actually (or about to be) very active in contrast to our "real downtown", (2) so the powers-that-be can claim credit for same to cover for their failures to do much for the "real downtown" and (3) so those same powers-that-be can funnel taxpayer dollars to their supporters who would rather do projects in those areas than the "real downtown" (e.g. the District and Lot J/Metro Park).

Thanks, I needed the laugh after I got tired of eating sushi and horribly dry pulled pork.. and mostly having to get in my car and driving elsewhere for just about any basic service while living on the Southbank. If I closed my eyes, shoved my fingers in my ear and plugged my nose with paper towels while walking along Riverplace Boulevard... I legit couldn't tell if I lived in the Southbank, or other equally as bustling neighborhoods like Midtown Atlanta or Uptown Charlotte.
Hmmmmm.... It just occurred to me that Field has recently purchased a new truck that could easily do some donuts at the Landing and get out of there without being spotted. As a master of tactical urbanism and placemaking initiatives, has he taken on a new Banksy-esque approach to activating downtown through performance art and political statements? The truth is out there..
They caught him on video:

Looks like Field is off the hook, but I have some new suspects in mind.
