Contrary to the past year and a half or so of spin, JEA's primary purpose is to provide affordable utility services within Northeast Florida - not to serve as a revenue spigot and honeypot for City Hall and its independent agencies.
I wonder if this is play to ensure and improve rail access to Blount Island? I believe the line out there now is on an easement through JEA property. That site is pretty segregated geographically from the rest of the JaxPort properties in that area by a lot of marshland.
Logistical question from a guy who knows nothing about power plants.
The Daily Record mentioned that, before being closed, the plant was going through 4.5 MILLION TONS of coal a year.
That's 25 million pounds of coal a day.
Where was that much coal coming from each day? By train? By truck? That's a ton of coal to move each day.
It came by rail.

They also have a coal conveyor system over Heckscher Drive down to the a docks so it appears they also could receive coal by ship.
