Title: Businesses want to know about Downtown security zone for GOP convention
Post by: thelakelander on June 18, 2020, 08:20:30 AM
QuoteDowntown Investment Authority officials say they've fielded concerns from Downtown businesses about the anticipated security zone for the Republican National Convention that one board member said could extend as far west as Hogan Street.

During the DIA's June 17 board meeting, CEO Lori Boyer and board member Braxton Gillam both said they've received questions about the security zone.

Gilliam, an attorney with Milam Howard Nicandri Gillam & Renner, said he took phone calls from law firms inside Wells Fargo Center and Bank of America Tower, both concerned about access to their offices during the Aug. 24-27 convention, where President Donald Trump will accept the 2020 GOP nomination.

Gillam referenced a "disclosure" that shows the security zones boundaries for the convention at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena to be the Arlington Expressway to the north; the St. Johns River to the south; the front of TIAA Bank Field to the east; and Hogan Street to the west.

"I think there's really a lack of information because it's new, but they wanted to know about accessing the office for work the week of this convention," Gillam said.

QuoteCurry said he didn't know how the security money would be transferred to Jacksonville, but said the city could use cash on hand, reserve dollars typically used as a stop-gap for FEMA emergency relief aid during hurricane recovery, if the government can't reimburse security costs in a timely manner.

OOOOKAY

Here is the quote that stood out to me the most from that article.

QuoteCurry said he didn't know how the security money would be transferred to Jacksonville, but said the city could use cash on hand, reserve dollars typically used as a stop-gap for FEMA emergency relief aid during hurricane recovery, if the government can't reimburse security costs in a timely manner.

Since Trump has an appalling record of paying his bills, especially for his rallys and ego booster events, I doubt we'll see this money for months if at all.  So we sacrifice the safety of our city to stroke one man's ego in the midst of an unprecedented health crisis.  Sounds like par for the course for Curry and his cronies.

It's fine. It's not like this is planned during hurricane season or anything.

Luckily, we can expect Nassau and St. Johns to chip in!

QuoteMajor GOP donors won't be staying in Jacksonville for Republican National Convention
Couples ponying up $1M+ and other big ticket donors will stay on Amelia Island.

Since the Federal government has  an appalling record of paying his bills,

made the comment more accurate; bureaucracy is the suck when it comes to things like this.

The issues are security would be a big deal for any convention.  They attract the crazies.

Any insight on how they're looking to do security in terms of where 1st amendment folks will be allowed, etc?
