Converted from a brickyard claypit into a manmade lake during the construction of Jacksonville's popular San Marco neighborhood in the 1920s, Marco Lake is one of the city's most picturesque spaces. Mostly surrounded by private property, it's also easy to miss even for locals. Fortunately, historic photos and modern drone footage can help capture this Jacksonville treasure.

Had no idea it was man made!

Pretty cool video - I'm a sucker for those things. I would argue that, while the lake is nice, it's far from being one of the most picturesque places in Jacksonville. The views appear to be mostly views of people's back yards. But YMMV.

Agreed. We have looked at several of the homes on the lake and it isn't that great. For us, non boaters, certainly not worth the premium. If you are on Sorrento and viewing the length of the lake, it is pretty nice, though.

I'd imagine it would be amazing if you had boat.

San Marco has a lot of nice parts and nice houses. Once I moved out, I pretty much only ever lived in Riverside, so I never got to know San Marco that well. But I like what I've seen.

I miss the old bridge, we called it "The Thrill Bridge" !*when it had a taller arch and steeper roadway.
Fun to drive over.

*great article and photos, which I did not read
prior to initially writing these comments.

I haven't done it in a few years, but the Edgewood bump is still around.

Uh...yeah. I recommend anyone who wants a luxurious stroll to start at the corner of Holly Lane or River Oaks and Hendricks Ave, and go toward the river. It's an easily navigable layout of streets and is pretty spectacular, from River Road all back in that part: Maple Lane, Elder lane, Laurel and Arbor lanes, it's one of the nicest non-gated places you'll find.

And there are other wonderful areas in that vicinity. You might even see San Marco Matt strolling around!

When I  was young, my family referred to it as the "tickle" bridge for the feeling you felt in the pit of your stomach if you maintained road speed over the hump.

Any info on how the lake fared during Hurricane Irma?  San Marco was mostly flooded then so wondering how high the lake went and where.

Well if the national media discover there are jogging clowns in San Marco , we're sunk.

Yeah, and the worst part about it is that they fit 20 of them in a single car.

Too bad many more such watery landscape components were not constructed.
Imagine a string of such water bodies throughout San Marco, Riverside. Along with a Public Access Feature.

I recall Jay Stein's place on the Lake- he sold and then purchased a nearby Riverfront property, one of the first Riverfront Tear Downs in recent history at the time; circa 1989.

I sold him a boat to go with the New property, hauled an old boat off the lake property.
