I wonder how John Gorrie became the name of a school in Jacksonville. I believe he was a person credited with inventing or improving refrigeration, but wasn't he from the Pensacola area? I guess at the time his work was a marvel of the time.
Figured I'd pull something from this article for a IG women's history month post. It appears that we don't have a single high school named after a woman. That's crazy!

Yeah it's nuts. The only middle school named after a woman is Julia E. Landon (which was originally a high school). There might be some elementary schools. Of course since the 1990s we haven't named schools after people.

I've always wondered the same. He was from Apalachicola.

When I was in school, Landon was named for a woman, I believe. Now it's a middle school.
It should also be noted that some schools are architectural "twins," i.e. schools built at the same time have often shared the same blueprints. So, by example, Wolfson and Westside are twins as are First Coast and Mandarin as are clearly demonstrated in the article's pictures. Due to subsequent modifications, it may not always be so obvious years later.
