As Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan focuses on the proposed mixed-use development of Lot J next to TIAA Bank Field, the city is taking another step in the broader proposed development of the riverfront Metropolitan Park and the Shipyards next door.
City Council President Scott Wilson introduced Ordinance 2019-555 on behalf of Mayor Lenny Curry that refunds $1.72 million in unused grant money to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection intended for improvements along the St. Johns River linked to the park.
The bill also would give Curry the authority to terminate the agreement with FDEP.
A land swap would obviously still need to be worked out for the park to be developed.
This is the latest siteplan for Met Park from the Jags, to get an idea of what the Phase II ask might look like for the Lot J project.

On the plus side, the "future phases" do move development further down Bay Street, as promised. On the minus side, they're going the wrong way :)
^Does it really move things closer to DT? That map says "future convention center" after assuming the future convention center we've been talking about for at least 20 years gets built.
At the pace things have moved with the city and Jags over the last decade (plus throwing in a recession or two into the mix) a phase 2 wouldn't be completed until 2040. More renderings to get marketers and rose-colored glass owners excited but I'll be happy with finally having a continuous block of storefront spaces open at night and on weekends before 2021.
How do you cross Bay Street (when there isn't a football game and there are't 1,000 cops helping)?

If I remember correctly, there is a traffic signal with crosswalks either at the access road between the hotel and office, or west of the office by the pond-garage. And there are signals with crosswalks by Intuition, and where the new ramp meets Gator Bowl Blvd. / Bay Street.

I was jokingly referring to the five pads surrounding the 5-star hotel, which actually move development further away from the downtown core (the ol' reverse dumbell).
Even with a perfect economy, we've gotta be looking at 10+ years on any convention center with the Jags.
Remediation alone will take two years before anything could get built.
We could have had shovels in the ground on a reasonably sized facility by the old Courthouse by now.
