Congaree and Penn did not pay for anything.
In an area of town that used to be defined by agricultural uses, its actually cool to see this property being returned to its roots (excuse the pun). My grandfather had an orange grove and a farm with cattle/pigs (the whole grass-fed beef and pork thing that's all the rage now) in Central Florida. All of that land is now tract housing. Making it in the agri business in Florida today is very tough. We talk a lot about land use on this site, and in that vein its interesting to see how one local farmer has adapted to a rapidly changing market and earning a living with some innovative uses (growing rice in Florida, using the property for agritourism, etc). They've also garnered national attention in the process. For someone that used to spend several summers wrangling up pigs, I think its pretty cool to see what they are doing at Congaree and Penn. I also enjoy eating, so articles about food also interest me :)
If that isn't your thing, that's also cool... we can all go back to watching the slow, plodding progress of the old Courthouse being dismantled in the name of 'progress' :-\

I'm 100% positive you've never been to the farm or had any of their products. Congaree and Penn has already brought a ton to the Jacksonville community and they've barely scratched the surface of what they want to do. Scott is extremely creative and knowledgeable (degrees from TCU and Miami in environmental sciences) and he has a great vision for the farm. Not to mention, they've pushed the food scene forward in Jax by hosting very accomplished chefs from across the country for some pretty great dinners.
