Perhaps a special election is in our future?
Jacksonville City Council members Katrina Brown and Reggie Brown have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud.

Didn't see that coming. Not sure what to read into it, however, the feds have a tendency of throwing the book at people who get on their radar.
Reggie Fullwood, Corrine Brown, now these two. Jacksonville democrats have some serious issues with corruption as of late.
This is unfortunate. Seeing city leaders get caught up in corruption when the community trusts them to do the right thing seems like it's happening more with our city and local government.

Whenever I see a story like this involving Democrats, a little piece of me dies. I thought I could count on them to protect me from the evil deeds of the Republicans and Corporations.
Sigh. I think I need A hug.
Welcome to the Party!

If the charges are true, this is really bad.
Long story short:
Katrina Brown's family owns a BBQ sauce company (KJB Specialties) that received millions in loans, including a federal SBA loan. Reggie Brown and Katrina Brown set up two false companies - A Plus Training and RB Packaging - fraudulently invoiced KJB for hundreds of thousands of dollars for training and packaging, and then had the reimbursement checks UPS'd to Reggie Brown's mom's house.
This has been brewing for months... ::)

Well, sooner or later, it was bound to ketchup with them.
Did Councilwoman Brown ever say what ended up happening to all the loan money since the bbq plant never opened?

Nope, complete radio silence.

Seems like it's all just a big misunderstanding.
Easy fix. Just provide the receipts for and unused raw materials and give the machinery back.
All fixed.
The whole indictment that I posted on the previous page is long, but definitely worth reading.
Someone isn't telling the truth.

So $3.3M in grants/loans and $365k from their personally money, but they have nothing to show for it? They didn't hire anyone, so how does a group of 3-4 burn through over $700k a year on a business venture for 5 years? These are tech startup sized cash burns.

This is hilarious. Weren't they both on the Finance Committee?

Katrina Brown and Reginald Brown, both of whom are respected elected public officials???
No, wait it gets better! "Katrina Brown had a diluted urine test and is required to take another one Friday." I love that this all still centers around a bbq sauce company. George Bluth would say "there's always money in the BBQ sauce plant ;)"

All these BBQ jokes are the pits.
I'm not as pissed with them setting up the shell corp and funneling the SBA and City Loan money to themselves because it was a loan that they were expected to pay back. Regardless of what they did with that money, there was always a potential for default.
The part that legit pisses me off, and this goes back to some of the other recent threads, is how they were able to draft and pass and enrich themselves with a city funded grant to the tune of almost a quarter million. Peanuts in a $1B budget. So why the fuck is it so difficult to get legitimate groups funding in the $10s of thousands that would truly make a difference. [/end rant]

Katrina Brown facing $12.25 million fine and up to 720 years in federal prison.
Reginald Brown facing $8.275 million fine and up 601 years in federal prison.
Both will be using a public defender.
Sad.

Tentative plan is to work out a barter.
34 million bottles of Sweet & Smokey BBQ, at wholesale.
Word on the street is that the sauce will be used to flood out the Landing, raze Berkman II, and remediate the Shipyards.
Outside chance we slip a million bottles under the table to the National Parks Service to satisfy the Met Park debt and kick off development there as well, and Iguana, Cordish, and Elements are already lobbying for their fair share of the 'sauce.
RFP for the convention center will be updated to also include on-site storage for roughly 20 million bottles.
Hope was that Sleiman could be bought out with 3-5 million bottles, but apparently, he's a Carolina Sweet type of guy.
If the bottles aren't received by December 31st, Curry's razing the prison.
