QuoteKeen Brewing Co., a startup craft brewery, is in the works north of McCoys Creek in the Rail Yard District.

Owners Joaquin "Joe" and Maryn Baez and friend Andrew Parks seek zoning approvals to open the brewery and taproom at 2100 Dennis St., west of Lemon Street.

The brewery is named for Joe's father, Joaquin, whose nickname was Keen.

Nice! It'll be good to see another brewery pop up, especially in such a historic industrial district.

The Daily record missed a chance to point out that this is less than half a mile from the proposed Tabula Rasa brewery and less than a mile from Engine 15.

It's been great to hear all of this new activity and repurposing of these older buildings in this district and I hope these craft breweries can spark some more interest and life into the area.

This also begs the question of how are current and future craft brewery and distillery scene compares to other regions. And not just the number of establishment but also in local support, quality, and broader recognition of the region's craft scene. I came upon this article earlier this year comparing two hot craft brewing regions (the older, established Richmond brewing scene and the upstart, fast-growing Norfolk-Virginia Beach collection of breweries) that highlight some advantages and challenges that parallel those the First Coast craft brewery growth and barriers they seem to be experiencing.

Great news. It would be nice to see the momentum continue both in the Rail Yard District and in Riverside by Bold City.
